April 24, 2011

The MSU women’s golf team held off Purdue and claimed first place at the Big Ten Championships in Glencoe, Ill., Sunday to win their third conference championship since 2001.

The Spartans outshot Purdue by three strokes in the final round to defeat the three-time defending champions by five strokes in their first conference championship since 2007 and third under head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll.

Sophomore Caroline Powers and junior Lindsey Solberg finished fourth and fifth, respectively, by shooting a 293 and 294, and the Spartans recovered from a slow first round start by finishing in the top two in each of the final three rounds.

The Spartans received contributions all through the lineup, as senior Aimee Neff finished in a tie for 19th by shooting a 303, freshman Allyssa Ferrell used a 72 in the final round to finish 29th by shooting a 309, and freshman Christine Meier and senior Natalie Brehm tied for 32nd by shooting a 310.

MSU’s four-round score was 1180, which bettered Purdue’s score of 1185 and Northwestern’s score of 1187.
