Volleyball ends year with victory

November 28, 2010

After a challenging year, the MSU volleyball team ended its season with a 3-2 victory over Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., Friday night.

The Spartans (15-16 overall, 7-13 Big Ten) came back from a 2-1 deficit to capture the final two sets, 25-17 and 15-8, respectively.

“We just kind of flipped a switch and we’re just like ‘we’re going to get this done,’ and then games four and five, we just totally dominated,” junior outside hitter Jenilee Rathje said.

Rathje, who had eight kills against the Wildcats (18-12, 8-11), became the 17th Spartan to collect 1,000 kills in her collegiate career.

Other leaders on MSU’s attack included senior outside hitter Megan Schatzle, who had 19 kills and 10 digs for her fourth consecutive double-double, and junior outside hitter Becca Zlabis, who posted her eighth double-double this season with 11 kills and 20 digs.

Supporting the hitters’ success, junior setter Natalie Emro and freshman setter Kristen Kelsay put up 22 and 19 assists, respectively. MSU outhit the Wildcats, .191 to .168, but Northwestern had the edge in blocks, 14-9.
