FDA might prohibit caffeinated booze

November 16, 2010

Nearly two weeks after Michigan banned Four Loko and other alcoholic energy drinks, the federal government is looking to do the same.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, is examining the safety of the drinks, which include high amounts of both alcohol and caffeine. If it finds the drinks unsafe, they will be removed from shelves.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, announced Tuesday in a statement he expects the FDA to find that caffeine mixed into alcoholic drinks is dangerous.

However, FDA spokeswoman Siobhan DeLancey said the drinks are “still under scientific review” and the FDA has not made its final decision yet.
