Board approves on-campus construction projects

September 17, 2010

The MSU Board of Trustees approved a number of on-campus projects — as well as the naming of the new softball facility at Old College Field — during its Friday meeting.

Construction on a new MSU Federal Credit Union branch and expanding IBM’s presence at the credit union’s former headquarters at 600 E. Crescent Road will begin this year.

Trustee Colleen McNamara broke unity with the board and voted against the MSUFCU branch relocation — which would be placed in an area of Farm Lane and Mount Hope Road — citing concerns on its proposed location.

“I’d like to see more time shared with the board on other location considerations around campus,” McNamara said. “If you’re driven down there, to have a commercial building in the middle of (an) agricultural area… it doesn’t make sense to me.”

The Main Library will be the site of a new project after unanimous approval to replace the building’s chilled water system that assists in sustaining building temperature and humidity. The measure will preserve 4.5 million volumes and 33,000 publications, according to a Trustee Finance Committee document.

“If this fails, we’re going to lose an extremely valuable resource in all those books,” said Fred Poston, MSU vice president for finance and operations and treasurer, during the meeting.

The board also voted unanimously to approve the naming of the new softball facility at Old College Field as Secchia Stadium.

Peter Secchia, MSU alumnus and former U.S. Ambassador to Italy, donated half of the funding toward the overall $2 million of construction of the project.

MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon said during the meeting that the $1 million donation was the largest gift MSU has received connected to women’s athletics and expressed appreciation toward the family.

“We’ve been working for a number of years to get funding for Old College Field,” Simon said. “The question came about as what is the best way to recognize the gift and contribute to the overall programs to the university.”

A naming ceremony is tentatively scheduled for April 2011 when construction is complete.

Construction on a new high bay addition to the MSU Cyclotron building also will move forward at an approved budget of $5.4 million.
