Hollis: New logo to debut in April
Tweet
A new Spartan logo will be part of a comprehensive brand and identity project, MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis said in a statement Thursday.
The logo first appeared on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Web site.
“The Spartan logo, posted on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Web site, is a single element of a comprehensive brand and identity project that will be unveiled in April by Michigan State athletics,” Hollis said in the statement. “As in all branding, the power of a single symbol cannot be appreciated or measured outside the context of the total presentation.”
Editor’s note: The above picture is a tracing of an image obtained from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Web site. No files large enough to be reproduced in The State News were available.

This new logo is unnecessary and really, really crappy.
That is all.

This logo is an abomination. Everyone needs to e-mail Hollis and University Relations to express our disgust.
Take five minutes and e-mail Hollis and University Relations; grass roots might be the best way to go

They make a good point that we should wait to judge until the entire package is unveiled, but I can tell you now that side by side with the old logo, this one looks overly-designed. I like the simplicity of the current logo.

This is a sad day for all Spartans. What’s next, no more tailgating on Munn Field? No more stuffed endangered polar bears in NattySci?

This new design is flat out hideous. I don’t care if this is “part of a package.” You could put this in front of a bunch of scantily clad super models and it would still look terrible.
The current logo is a classic design and there is NO reason to change it.

This is the result of a bunch of marketing people trying to make themselves seem like they actually are worth their paycheck in a time of department budget cuts. Let’s take a look at how the meeting went down for this decision:
Marketing guy #1: Man our job sure is easy, and we get paid well to do it.
Marketing guy #2: Yeah, we both know almost anyone could do this job. Maybe we should do something that brings in new revenue so we don’t get fired.
Marketing guy #1: Hey, you know what’s hot these days? Re-branding! It’s all over those trade magazines that I don’t actually read. Plus it turned out great for the Pistons in 1997. Not only did they sell a ton of new merchandise, but when everyone realized that the idea was a failure and the new logo sucked they went back to the old logo and again sold a ton of new merchandise!
Marketing guy #2: I like it. Now if only we could pull this idea off without doing any actual work ourselves…
Marketing guy #1: Nike.
Marketing guy #2: Bingo. And we know they’ll only have the university’s best interests at heart at all times.
Marketing guy #1: Man, that was a lot of work. Let’s go back to watching ESPN all day.
If it changes...

Okay, I will be quite blunt. This new logo sucks balls. It’s crap. It’s ugly. Michigan State is the GREEN AND WHITE, so these idiots bring out a BLACK logo? WTF?
Let’s just color our helmets maize and blue and put an “M” on it. This is BS. As a soon-to-be alumnus, I find this to be garbage. Let’s revolt.

They need to have a vote of some kind before implementing this. Most people think it’s awful and don’t want it to change. They can’t just change a classic State icon.

The existing logo- classic. Crisp. Definitively Spartan.
The new logo is horrible. It’s looks like some High School logo. Blech.

I really hope that I’m asleep right now and the new logo is a bad dream that will go away when I wake up.
The bar between the “face” and “plume” is so trashy and stupid looking – how is it in any way an improvement over the current beloved logo?

I had a bad day at work that only got worse when I found out about the logo change. It looks…godawful! A few years ago I was driving through Ann Arbor when I looked up at the yellow halo they had decided to use to pimp out their stadium…I could barely drive, I was laughing so hard…Now…I have that “what goes around comes around” feeling…This is embarrassing. It will be like wearing “the cone of shame”….oh my…

As a proud alum, all I have to say is what a terrible waste of resources, time and a perfectly good existing school image and logo. You would be hard pressed to find someone that doesn’t recognize our Sparty. I will continue to use the old logo for as long as I live!

This logo is horrible, absolutely horrible! It doesn’t even look like a spartan now. They should have a vote because NO ONE would pick that crap logo. MSU is known for Sparty and their logo. I’m extremely upset.

Although I will hold off on making a final judgement until I see the full branding & identity project release in April, I can say that if this IS the new logo, MSU can forget about seeing a donation from this alumnus anytime soon. I have seen pee-wee football teams with better logos than this.

It is an absolute abomination. The Spartan head logo is one of the symbols of our University. “The new logo” is not ours. It’s hideous. It’s stupid. We are not Nike State University. We are Michigan State University. We can not let these*&(*&^$$@ steal our traditions for their marketing purposes. I’m done with buying MSU gear, and I might be done with season tickets. I guess we really are second rate….
