Izzo sounds off on new logo
Tweet
Men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo showed support for the athletic department’s new project that includes a redesigned logo during his weekly press conference on Monday.
“For all of you out there that are complaining, shame on you, because … we are trying to do what’s best for Michigan State University, our athletic department and the great people that we associate with and Nike’s done a heck of a job,” Izzo said. “Mark Hollis and our president have done a heck of a job and if somebody out there is looking for my support on this mad about the logo, find a new basketball coach because this guy is going 100 percent with our athletic department, our athletic director, our president and I think this is going to be one of the greater moves we’ve made.”
Izzo hinted that all of MSU’s teams would be unified under the same logo and uniform design.
“We are going to be moving into that new century here in the proper way and I’m excited about it,” he said.

one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time. no doubt. but lets not forget that you are here for your fans, and your fans don’t approve, your fans don’t approve. that is the way of life. this is termed free speech, and is considered a fundamental value in many cultures/ societies.
shame on you Mr. Izzo for trying to suppress free speech. Props for building an elite basketball program.

The fans and alums hate it. Everyone makes mistakes in their comments and Izzo made mistakes in these. I applaud him for supporting Hollis but this one is a loser. If he wants us to choose him as coach or the old logo, I choose the logo that will be here forever, he won’t be.

I hope they realize their mistake when they see how much merchandise sales will fall. I personally will not buy any MSU gear with the new logo.

Sorry Coach, but your comments sound like the “If your not for us, your against us” propaganda from the start of Gulf War 2. This ‘New’
Logo looks like a piece of trash and is totally unnecessary. Remember New Coke? Carry on with your support for the Logo, but do not expect support for it from the Fans, Student body or the Alumni.

Everyone needs to calm down.
Sorry LoveMSU Hockey, but Izzo has done more for this school than you ever will. He also knows more about this situation. So why don’t you chill out and wait until the whole story comes out before saying a bunch of stuff you’ll regret later.
All the bickering is ridiculous. Just wait and see the full story before you start yelling at one of the most important figures in our school’s history. Even if you disagree with him, you owe him that much.

I’d vote for a new coach. If he is willing to say, “me or the old logo,” I’d go with the old logo. Sometimes doing what is right for the school means leaving things the way they belong. KEEP THE OLD LOGO!!!

Cool, I hope Izzo is looking forward to seeing our guys playing in neon green ala Seattle Seahawks pro combat.
UPDATE
(01/25/10 4:09pm)Report
Just got word from some people at scUM. Apparently, they’ve gotten word of this article and have been pretending to be MSU students/alumni to denounce Izzo as a coach. They think this will make him feel less appreciated and consider leaving the school.
Just think about what you read on these boards.

I think we should give our new logo to U of M, it should probably be able to coach their football team better than RR.

Holy Cow! When did everybody turn into such a bunch of stick-in-the-muds?
Change happens. Accept it. We’ve changed the logo a half dozen times in history and people probably tripped every single time.
And if Coach wanted us to change our logo to a drunken lemur, I’d say Go Lemurs!
Izzo, you rule!

All I know is “real” real Spartans will support Tom Izzo NO MATTER WHAT. If he’s in support of this, the least We can do is wait and see. I don’t particularly like the new logo, but I trust Izzo and I like Hollis.
And to all the scUM ‘nards – Izzo knows a thing or two about Loyalty, and it runs deeper than a logo.

I wouldn’t put it past them. Whichever logo we decide on, we should definitely consider selling them the scraps. They’ll try and buy anything (coaches, logos, etc.) from superior schools.
What?

Why can’t we make the all of the sports team uniform with the current logo? This argument makes no sense…
Re: What?

Because they all wear different ones. Think about it; spartan bridge for basketball, helmet for football, merchandising gear is completely different. If you’re going to change one, someone’s going to get pissed. At least this way there are some positives.

Izzo is gonna say, “shame on me” for complaining about a new logo? I might listen if his basketball team could beat Minnesota by more than one point, or not get creamed by any real team. It’s not so much the new logo idea, but the fact that the design SUCKS. Nike did a heck of a job? Yeah, Izzo, you also did a heck of a job coming in second place last year.

Izzo, what the hell. The logo sucks. It’s ugly. Do me a favor, stop yelling at fans and just get us to actually win the national championship this year.

first off UNC was practically an NBA team last year. Honestly they probably could have put up a good fight with the worse teams in the NBA, probably lose but it would have been interesting.
At the same time lets not kid ourselves, Izzo and the University have a mutual benefit relationship. Izzo is one of the highest paid and best taken care of coaches in college bball. In return for that money love he gives us a high caliber team. but just about every year we have to play the waiting game to see if Izzo is going to leave for another program. Honestly it gets old. I don’t hear coaches at all the other great schools getting mentioned every year, except Izzo.

That’s because Izzo is… wait for it… A GOOD COACH! You’re honestly complaining that he gets tempted every year and consistently rejects the millions of dollars to stay in East Lansing?
I’m done with this; everyone needs to grow up and stop making an argument where there is none.

A lot of fans/alums over-reacted when they first saw this new logo and I’ll admit I was in that boat. But whatever Tom Izzo says he gets and if he says it’s a brilliant move by Hollis as he said in todays press conference (via spartanmag.com) then I’m all for it. We haven’t even seen the complete package yet people! lol I was pissed at first and said it was an idiotic move but whatever Tom Izzo says goes. Plain and simple and every fan/student at Michigan State knows this. Izzo is the face of Michigan State University so if he says it’s a great idea then I’m all for it.

how often do you hear bo ryan’s name mentioned for other jobs? guy has a higher win percentage then Izzo. What about when Stoops down at OU removed his name from consideration at ND? Different sport, but the principle is the same. What about Boehiem at Cuse? How come all of these other great coaches have at least some nominal loyalty to their schools and do not rub it in everyone elses face that they could leave whenever they want?
Follow your own advice: quit making arguments when there is none.
