Police look into sexual assault at fraternity

By Kate Jacobson (Last updated: 11/24/09 11:51pm)

East Lansing police are investigating a sexual assault that reportedly occurred Friday night at the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house.

The victim was a female MSU student, East Lansing police Capt. Kim Johnson said. Police would not release further details of the assault.

East Lansing police Sgt. Andrew Bouck said he was unsure if the victim underwent medical testing at Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital following the incident.

The department currently has no suspects related to the assault, which reportedly happened at the house, 128 Collingwood Drive, Johnson said, adding that the case is open.

The night the assault was reported, there was a party at the fraternity house, and police are unsure whether the assailant was affiliated with the fraternity, Johnson said. A detective has been assigned to the case and is interviewing the victim and potential witnesses, he added.

Lambda Chi Alpha President Brent Ebelt could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Interfraternity Council President Alex Fike said the council, which oversees 25 fraternities at MSU, knows about the assault, but does not know what will happen with the fraternity.

“It’s still kind of difficult to say,” Fike said. “There is a wide variety of factors. The police would be involved, the university might be involved, their national headquarters might be involved.”

Vice President for Student Affairs and Services Lee June said the university does not get involved with legal matters of off-campus organizations unless the matter is an issue of safety that directly relates to on-campus students.

However, he said the university is concerned for the involved individuals who are students.

Johnson said the victim is home and is being taken care of by her family. He said detectives will continue to investigate suspects after the Thanksgiving break.

“By the time we get (interviews), we can generate a suspect,” Johnson said.

I would wait and let the police finish their investigation before “taking a stand against the disgusting greeksystem.” At this point “police are unsure whether the assailant was affiliated with the fraternity….” You don’t have all or even most of the facts.

So when an on-campus aggravated assault occurs, the University refuses to acknowledge if any student groups (Football team) were involved, yet when a sexual assault occurs the name of the fraternity is not kept private until more evidence is gathered?

I am an alumni of the house in question, and there is no doubt in my mind that what occurred (or what did not occur?) did not involve any Lambda Chis.

Disgusting nonGreek system.

The football team is affiliated with MSU and the athletic department and they don’t publicly announce names. Frats are not, they only said the location of the rape, not that any brother was involved but way to be defensive about that. Maybe you should do as they do at ASU and remove every copy of the state news to avoid the bad press. Rape on!

Come on....

11/25/09 1:35pm

Of course just blame the frat, they hold parties and let random people in all in the spirit of having a good time and of course one little mistake occurs and all hell breaks loose. Damn the IFC sucks, if someone screws up… punish them not there whole house of the greek system in general, thats messed up.

Obviously you are talking about an ALLEGED rape. There is nothing to be defensive about. Lambda Chi has 10 sober monitors at any house party, including the president, risk manager, etc. to try to prevent these type of alleged situations.

I know everyone’s cousin’s friend’s sister’s boyfriend once knew a girl who went to a frat house and got roofied, and the Fox show Greek is a completely accurate depiction of fraternity life, so all frats must be the same.

Sad

We can all see where this is going. Freshman girl screams GHB after doing triple shots of tequilla all night, blacked out, and woke up in a random bed. Not saying that’s what happened, but more likely than not that’s what happened.

Rape/taking advantage of someone is repugnant. But before you talk about “disgusting Greek system”, please remember that the only difference between Greeks and nongreeks is the organized nature of the former. I can assure you these things don’t happen in my house for example but if they, god forbid, ever did, that brother would be expelled and sent to jail in a heartbeat.

You live in an apartment and a few friends and decide to have a party, a few friends of friends show up and one of them end up raping a girl.

Does that make everyone in the apartment a disgusting rapist dirtball?

Bummer

Typical MSU frat life…not a surprise whatsoever, unfortunately.

We all know the real problem here: alcohol. If we still had prohibition, many of our nation’s problems would be solved.

I mean. Is there anyone who DOESN’T make fun of frat kids? They’re a plague. MSU would be the most perfect place on Earth if there weren’t any frat houses. So tired of hearing about these IDIOTS and the garbage they get themselves into. What a bunch of STUPID kids. I thought about rushing a frat my freshman year, but instead I killed myself. It was hilarious. I’d do it all over again if I had the chance.

Lazy

To GREEK: Yes. that should answer your question.

To Quin Shi: Shut up. Relax. and have a beer.

To Darko and Stevedavidsonrick: I agree. mostly. There is ONE house that I belong to, and its awesome. So please do not include ALL Frats in this argument.

Sincerely, OMEGA brother.

If you are conceited enough to shout out a random Greek letter and erroneously expect everyone to know what reputation you carry, you must be a stupid frat boy or sorority girl. Go back to making your presence known by preying on drunk girls, and leave the honorable Greek alphabet alone.

Im a member of a fraternity, Ive seen one potential rape. Not anywhere near the fraternity but hundreds of miles away at a party in my hometown.

I was one of the few people that stopped it from happening and got a black eye and a few bruises from doing so.

If I was to steriotype an entire racial group because of the actions of one of its members I would be scorned and called a racist, but when people use an outdated steriotype to generalize the greek system they somehow strenghten the steriotypes against them despite the truth of fiction behind it.

The chance this “rape rescue” story from the comment before mine is true? ZERO.

What a LIAR you are. You didn’t save anyone from rape. No one is going to buy that. You’re a FRAT guy. You are NOTHING without a large contingent of your friends.

Got into an argument with a frat guy at Ricks.

Dear Disgusting nonGreek system,

“As for the Greek system being disgusting? Were you referring to Greek’s being more personable, having a higher GPA, better/higher paying jobs, or involvement in more commonunity outreach that their non-Greek peers?”

1) Maybe in the packaging profession.
2) I bet your parents drive your 30 year old broke-ass to football games and alum meetings.
3) Thanks for misspelling “community.” It makes your argument so much more legible.

What I said was true, it was a guy from Northern Michigan University who was trying to get with an girl I knew from high school.

She was in a bedroom in my friends apartment passed out, I saw him walk inside and he had two friends sorta watching the door so no one would come in.

Me and one of my friends asked them what was going on. They told us it was none of our business. We told them we wanted to check on her and he told us a friend was with her.

Is there ANY reason this IDIOT is rambling on about this terrible story other than to point out that he’s a hero so chicks will dig him? Especially since the only way he’s getting laid is by means of RAPE?

What a LOSER you are dude. Is there anything better than “YOUR IGNORANT”? Guy is insulting someone’s intelligence while misunderstanding the use of simple contractions as in “YOU ARE = YOU’RE”

There’s no way this moron graduates. Because if he does, I might as well wipe my ass with my degree.

Kill yourself.

My comment is directed to all posters regarding this article:

As a female on this campus I feel more concerned walking around East Lansing, where people get BEATEN and no details are released. Where people break into HOUSES and justice is not served. The fact that there is an ALLEGED crime at a fraternity house is NO DIFFERENT then what occurs nightly at house, apartment and even dorm parties.

I cant take any more of this you’re (yes I understand contractions i was lazy in my typing sue me)obviously an ignorant prick with no friends who insults greeks because we have friends and a social life and you dont.

Anyone else whos greek on here stop responding to this story, there is no winning this argument. Its only inflating a story which has no real details other than police are investigating something that could have happened at some time to somebody at a greek house…nothing more

Re: greek

Hey, greek – I’m an older student, worked for about 10 years in IT-related automotive industry jobs before I came here. From the many supervisory positions I held over the years, ranging from a team supervisor for desktop support technicians, to the director of an entire branch of the IT department, I can tell you this: There is a general negativity associated with greek life. If we needed to hire 5 people, interviewed 10, 5 of which made some reference to their greek background (or we found it on their facebook/myspace), the 5 non-greek people were almost ALWAYS given preference.

greeks=rape and death

11/29/09 6:54pm

it’s all old news. rape is the only way greeks get laid. it’s old news. 3 incidents rape/death in less that a month. all those people apologizing for the greeks—you are morons.

just another rape story

11/29/09 6:57pm

since the beginning of this term there have been literally hundreds of these “party rapes”. most of the victims are too embarassed to report it or don’t remember. it’s good someone FINALLY reported this. about time.

dress like sluts?

11/29/09 7:20pm

girls should be able to dress any way they want. a girl wearing a miniskirt and no panties passed-out drunk at a strange party at 3 AM doesn’t deserve to be raped. the greek culture figures she asked for it.
