It’s one of the many unfair aspects of life, but the people with the best connections tend to get the best treatment. The University of Illinois is no different. The university has suspended its controversial Category I admissions process in wake of a Chicago Tribune report that the school gave preferential treatment to applicants with more clout.

It’s very similar to the legacy system at many schools. No wonder our country is falling apart; too many years of “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” are coming to fruition.

This school also stubbornly refused to get rid of a racially stereotyped mascot because it feared it would lose money. It did. It lost my alumnus money because the mascot was still there. The education there is great, but the higher-level administrators are completely out of touch.

“the university can either function as a business or it can function like a school.”

Without commenting on the actual position(s) of this editorial, the above statement is totally incorrect—it’s not a binary, and to suggest, as they do later, that the former should be dropped for the latter demonstrate a superficial understanding of how colleges actually run. Scholarships? Business. Alumni donations? Business. New facilities? Business. The processes that allow the school to “function as a school,” are largely due to business operations. The nature of the relationship between the two functions is what yields crappy admissions policies.

	Also, one quick final thing:

“college is supposed to be where young people setting up careers get to start on the same playing field as everyone else. “

This one’s not at all supported by the history of higher education.

Funny, I haven’t seen articles published about the minority students admitted to top universities with a stellar 2.5 H.S. GPA and barely a 20 on the ACT…oh yeah, and let’s not forget the scholarship they were offered. Hmmm – smell that? It’s a two-way street! I don’t care if you got in because of who your daddy is, how big your bank account is, or what color your skin is – it’s all the same principle, stop pretending it’s not.

Simple solution – no names, no addresses on your college app, just a Soc #. Once the admissions office selects the best ANONYMOUS candidiates – contact info is disclosed to extend acceptance.

Thanks, Alum. My sentiments exactly.
Had the news been that Illinois (or MSU) was doing away with the racial preferences they have in place to ensure ‘diversity’, the s’news would have been on the other side.
