RHA brings Death Cab for Cutie to Breslin
By Chris Vannini (Last updated: 01/26/09 9:21pm)A string of music artists coming to campus continued Monday when the Residence Halls Association, or RHA, announced Death Cab For Cutie will perform April 18 at Breslin Center.
“Death Cab For Cutie has been an up-and-coming indie rock act that have finally made it big,” said Anthony Carlo, RHA’s director of special events. “We found out they that they were touring again and that they were looking to do some dates in the Midwest.”
Death Cab For Cutie last came to MSU in 2003 when they performed in the Union Ballroom.
“To go from the Union to the Breslin Center is a little bit of a change,” RHA President Mark Dobson said. “Just by our choice of venue alone, they’ve really increased in popularity.”
Carlo said he has hoped to bring the band back to campus for the past two years.
“We looked at a date this October but the deal fell through, and then I was approached again in November about doing them later in the year and we jumped on it.”
RHA has brought Motion City Soundtrack, Eric Church and Kings of Leon to campus during the 2008-09 school year.
Dobson said the fall semester didn’t have as many concerts as he hoped, and he believes bringing in higher profile artists can offset the difference.
“There’s been some years where we did a ton of shows but they’ve been relatively low in cost,” he said.
Kings of Leon performed Monday but most of that planning occurred in the fall, he said.
ASMSU also announced that rapper Asher Roth will open for Lupe Fiasco on Feb. 12 at the Auditorium.
This will be ASMSU’s second major concert this school year, with the first being the iVote concert in September. ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.
ASMSU and RHA pay the difference in price between student and public tickets.
ASMSU Student Assembly Vice Chairperson for External Affairs Kyle Dysarz said he hopes the concerts can help students who are feeling the effects of a slumping economy.
“That’s why we’re investing within the students,” Dysarz said. “Saving them money on those tickets in hopes that they will go out and buy tickets because they’re cheaper.”
Tickets for Death Cab for Cutie go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. Students can buy tickets in person at Breslin Center or online at breslincenter.com.
Student tickets cost $25 and general public tickets cost $31.
The concert will open up with fellow indie rock bands Ra Ra Riot and the Cold War Kids.

01/26/09 11:17pm$300,000 in funding and they’re still charging $25/ticket? For DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE?
Good luck selling more than 1/4 of the Breslin.

01/27/09 8:55amYou’re complaining about $25/ticket for Death Cab + Cold War Kids?! I can’t remember the last time I went to a concert where the tickets were less than $35-$40/ea, much less one that is right around the corner. This will sell out, without a doubt.

01/28/09 11:19amRyan, I’m trying to figure out where your numbers are coming from… RHA in total has a budget of about 450,000, but that covers all concerts, Movie rental Offices, the Campus Cinema, cost of renting movies, halls, paying staff etc. In fact, the Special Events budget for the semester isn’t even 1/2 of what your talking about. Where are you numbers coming from?

01/28/09 9:42pmWhy do we keep wasting money on all these lame bands? Why not bring some diversity to the campus… bring on some country!
Spaghetti Man!
01/29/09 12:08amWell, I believe MSU adheres to the policy of leaving that incest music south of the Mason-Dixon line.

01/29/09 11:41pmUm, Ben. Ever since when is Tim McGraw or whatever other crap you want to bring considered affordable, “diverse” or even un-lame? Yeah, that’s what I thought. This line-up in itself is diverse, which you would know if you ever took off your ten-gallon hat and let some real music into that head of yours.
Stupid.

01/29/09 11:44pmRyan I work at a college arena similar to Breslin and we had Death Cab for Cutie last semester and it was a sell out crowd. And let me tell you tickets were way more the $25 bucks.
