There is a genocide going on in Gaza today, and we are paying for it. More than 200 people have been killed in less than an hour. Hospitals are treating wounded in the dark, without electricity. No ventilators, no lights. No food, as the last border opening allowed less than a day’s worth of bread into the strip.
No electricity means that Gaza’s sanitation system cannot function, and so standing sewage builds and there is little clean water to even wash the wounds of survivors. This current assault began as schools let out, and so Gaza’s children dodged F16 rockets destroying Gaza City streets to run home.
President-elect Barack Obama should make it priority to make a strong statement against the slaughter in Gaza. While the U.S. cannot afford health care for its citizens, we are forced to pay for the F16’s and Apache helicopters Israel uses to slaughter Gaza’s citizens. By contrast, one Israeli per year is killed by “rockets” from Gaza, which do not have exploding heads.
I spent a year working for American Near East Refugee Aid in Palestine. The current slaughter is being used as an election ploy within Israel, while in reality it makes its citizens less safe.
President-elect Obama: Do not ignore your base. Do not ignore those who voted and campaigned for you. Do not ignore genocide.
