Discrimination against same-sex couples shouldn't be tolerated
I am also a graduate student in mathematics at MSU, and I did not want the math department’s contribution to this discussion to fall entirely on the side of Matt Masarik, Audrey Deguire and Jaylan Jones (Tolerance needed for those who don’t support same-sex marriage SN 11/18).
First I’d like to say when the time comes and Masarik and company are told that they’re not allowed to marry or adopt because of their views on Proposition 8, then maybe they will be in a position to complain about not being “tolerated” by society. Until then, this talk of “tolerance” is just another tiresome round in the rubber-glue game that well-off conservatives like to play with anyone rude enough to complain about not having the same rights and privileges as they do.
As someone who has a passing familiarity with a few Bible stories, I’d like to ask if perhaps Numbers 31:17-18 is where the writers of that previous letter get their privileged insight into “the true beauty and glory of human life and sexuality.” The passage referenced depicts Moses in one of his many unkind moments: “‘Kill all the male children! And kill all the women who have had sex with a man!’ said Moses. ‘But spare the lives of the young girls who have never had sex with a man. Keep them for yourselves.’” A loving rendition in Legos of this and many other Bible tales can be found at www.thebricktestament.com.
Perhaps I can be forgiven if I regard informed consent as a standard for human sexuality far superior to the moldy old words of genocidal prophets who didn’t know how to carbon date their way out of a paper bag.

Informed consent? really?
I bet Matthew is this sore because
1. because his parents named him matthew and not james (both are biblical names btw)
2. He lives in some sweet post-modern world where his values are somehow not influenced by Christianity or are perfectly relativistic (read: non-existant)
Does anyone know how to play a rubber-glue game?
I also detected a hint of intolerance in Matthew’s statements. He assumes that “well off conservatives” are automatically religious, and that the religious people are automatically anti-gay.
Tolerant? Hah! Someone needs to review their calculations.

This issue is a dead horse. It should have remained a dead horse the first time that the voters of California killed it. The California Supreme Court then ruled that the horse was not, in fact dead, so the California voters shot the horse again just to make sure. The gay rights movement has, of course, formally declared that no horse is to dead to beat and is behaving accordingly.
Here’s an idea. Why don’t we forget that Prop 8. was to amend the California Constitution to prohibit gay marriage. Stop and think for a second what the gay rights movement is asking the Court to do. By asking it to strike down a part of the state constitution, they are effectively inviting the California Supreme Court to rule that they have authority superior to that of the laws of California and are free to ignore even the state constitution if they disagree with the manner in which an amendment is passed (notwithstanding that provisions for amending the constitution are contained within the constitution)
If a state supreme court has the power to ignore a state constitution, what then is to stop the US Supreme Court from following that precedent and making a ruling that the 13th and 14th Amendments to the US Constitution, for example, were invalid because both were adopted by states being threatened with force. Obvious something like that would never happen, but the precedent it sets is a dangerous one.
If gay rights organizations and leftists push for this precedent from the California Supreme Court, they may really wish they hadn’t a few years from now when a ruling like this comes back to bite them on an issue where the court is not so far to the left.

What am I?
11/20/08 @ 8:33am
I am not a “well-off conservative.”
I voted for Obama and largely democratic.
I have a deep conviction about the Christian faith.
I do not condone gay marriage.
I think homosexuals are people just like me—imperfect but loved.
What does that make me?
We should be careful about generalizations, Matthew.

The California Supreme Court isn’t the only way to overturn Prop 8. SCOTUS has overturned provisions of state constitutions before. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if a California case ended up there in the next few years. Certainly if the California Supreme Court overturns Prop 8 somebody or other will go to SCOTUS.
So your claim that legal anarchy will ensue should the California Supreme Court rule on the matter is kinda dead in the water.

“What am I?”, that makes you a bigot. You don’t have to condone anything, but I know what you really meant was that you would vote to ban gay marriage if you could.
I don’t condone your faith, but i’m not going to stop you from practicing it.
We live in a country with freedom of religion, equal protection under the law, and have ‘been endowed by our creator with the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ — and you want to take all that away from us because you have a personal problem with it.
Get a fucking life you condescending prick. Go do your own shit and we will do ours. Just dont force me to live the way you do and I’ll return the favor.
How’s that for a generalization?

J-Money: “He assumes that “well off conservatives” are automatically religious, and that the religious people are automatically anti-gay.”
Really? Where in is letter does he state those assumptions?
If you read the letter by the Matt, Audrey, and Jaylan, it is quite obvious that they are both religious and anti-gay. However, Matthew does did not lump all religious people into that category.

Justin,
I take offence for your message. “Who am I?” was trying to make a point that they don’t condone Gays and they are a Democrat. Why does the Christian faith bother you so much? How does the personal beliefs of this person affect you?
Christ calls us not to judge and maybe that’s what Christians have been guilty of doing too much. Personaly I don’t understand why some must judge Christians the way some do.
I’m sorry if this responce is a little heated. It bothers me that people make generalisations about Christians just because they have associated themselves with “Right Wing” Republicans. Not every Christian is against Gay Marriage here on earth, and not every Christian chooses to associate with the Republican party. And for everyone’s information I didn’t vote for Mcain in the last election.
Please respond with any insight.

Live from my mother’s basement, it’s Jason Van Dick!
But of course you can’t discuss anything without me! I’m a a self-proclaimed expert on everything! And I have to teach you evil, evil liberals a lesson every chance I get because you bastards got me kicked out of MSU! Not me! You! It’s not like I was transporting a weapon across campus for no good reason.
That and I miss my boyfriend Kyle Bristow. We had a good thing going until you screwed it up, making sweet love until daybreak. We where going to marry someday. Then you broke us apart! If I can’t marry Kyle then screw the lot of you! No one will marry! Muhahahahahaha!!!!!!

If you don’t support gay marriage, don’t marry someone of the same sex. Attend a church that doesn’t perform or recognize gay marriages. But your personal religious beliefs should not interfere with government recognition of anyone else’s marriage.

“Jesus Lover”, the christian faith in and of itself does not bother me, it bothers me when people force their faith on others. “Who am I?”‘s personal beliefs do not effect me substantially until they try to put them into law by limiting my rights.
I have some respect for those who are personally ‘against homosexuality’ but would not attempt to deny others their rights to live how they please. Unfortunately, I don’t think “Who am I?” was in that boat, or he or she would have stated it.
Justin
11/20/08 @ 11:28am
On top of that, if someone truly believes ‘homosexuals are just as sinful as everyone else’, then why do they take special care to limit homosexuality. Isn’t it the same as eating unclean meat or mixing fabrics? This is a biblical law that we leave up to personal choice. Some people choose to follow it, some people don’t. Of course, this is somewhat different from homosexuality because people have sexual orientations which determine who they attracted to and want to have relationships with (vs. just about everyone loves bacon). So I guess I am bothered by Christians who single out gays. Why do they do that?

I am so sick of reading about this issue in the state news. We live in a democratic society and the majority has voted, so let it go already, or at least until the next election.

No!!!!!! Being against gay marriage is my bread and butter, my reason for being! You can’t do that! All I’ll have left is defending guns! No!!!!!!

Really? How much are we talking here? I’ll need at least enough to buy a one-way ticket to MSU to be with my sweet, sweet Kyle.

You know, I’m a liberal Christian who doesn’t really care about the issue one way or another, but an offensive tool letter like this is the kind of thing that’ll make me shoot down any chance I get to vote on this subject.
The only thing more annoying than a neo-con is a liberal who loves the smell of his own fart.

Let the gays be gay here on Earth as much as they want to. When I die and go to Heaven with God I know that the gays won’t be there. I’m willing to deal with living on Earth with gays because I know I’ll be spending an eternity later without them.
To all the gays…I forgive you…

Justin,
I’m sorry if things got a little heated during my most recent response. Yes it’s true that the government does let some shameful acts go un-punished while letting Gay marriage be their example of sin. I would agree that the government should not intervine in this area, so I’m not as against Gay marriage as some Christians.
And Gays should not be singled out either. I guess that’s one area where Christians could use a lot of work in.

Is anyone going to mention the biggest group supporting Prop 8 was the Mormon Church? So there goes all the “slippery slope” arguments against allowing polygamy next and even the arguments against the sanctity of marriage.
I said it yesterday and I said it again, gays don’t want to be included in the religious instituion of marriage. They want to enjoy the civil instituion of marriage and the rights afforded from said civil arrangement by the governmnet. If the only argument against gay marriage is coming from the church, should we be allowing it to influence governmnet policy? My opinion will always be no as our Constitution explicitly defines a separation of church and state.
If churches don’t want to marry gays, that is their right, but to strip gays of the civil institution and the legal rights it provides is unconstitutional.

So you think that the masturbators and swearers and people who are disrespectful of their elders or have sex before they get married won’t be in heaven either? Because my priest taught me that a little pennance and some purgatory will get you there in time. I agree with the premise of ‘let god deal with it’, but i don’t think you should be telling everyone who is and isn’t getting to heaven. that’s called blasphemy.

Re: to all the people responding to catholic and proud of it
i hope that most of you know that “catholic and proud of it” is a troll trying to demean people of faith by satirically responding to this letter like a stereotypical christian…
homosexuals have all right to be as miserable as heterosexuals… let them get married… just kidding, i think marriage is good and i truly believe that everyone should have access to something that bonds two lovers together… or three… depending on how you role…
we should also stop the insults on people of faith simply because bundling them up in one category (in this case anti-gay) is just as ignorant as the people most of the posters are criticizing (neo-conservatives and nazi people)… well… you could if you are going to slap freedom of speech on me…

Simply put, discrimination should not be written into the state constitution. This is American folks. Majority rules but does not have the ability to take rights away from minorities or make them “less equal”. The constitution exists to protect those that decide to march against the status quo.

Jason, you are a joke. From what I could tell from your blog, you conduct most of your political discussion on an undergrad website, allmsu and facebook. Treason
Now that this is over I just want to say loudly and proudly that everyone who voted for Obama is a communist traitor undeserving of life, let alone citizenship in this country. And anyone who is white or Christian who voted for Obama is a traitor to their race and/or their religion (as the case may be). If you think I am wrong for saying this, I truly don’t give a damn. Mrs. Barack Hussein Obama may, for the first time in their life, be proud to be an American. I, for the first time in my life, am no longer proud to be an American because it is clear that a majority of this country has become intellectually, racially, and culturally retarded. That’s all. I am going to enjoy the last 75 days of freedom in America to the extent I can. I am going to start with a good shot of whiskey – not malt liquor.
Can you feel the civic pride and love of democracy in his post? Thanks for reminding us why we fight Jason. Good day fucker.

“Can you feel the civic pride and love of democracy in his post?”
The YAF here aren’t into democracy. They’ve stated several times that they think Democracy is for chumps, and think there should be a poll tax and intelligence test to keep dumb people from voting. And while that last bit might sound great, you have to wonder where the line between ‘stupid’ and ‘not stupid’ is going to be drawn, and by whom.
The good news is that the reign of error will soon be over
From Kyle’s part, anyway. We’ll probably still get buzz-bombed by JVD because he’s got nothing better to do.
