Common Ground interferes with Lansing City Market
(Last updated: 07/09/08 6:54pm)The imposition of the Common Ground Music Festival on the Lansing City Market’s vendors and customers is uncompensated and barely acknowledged. More than 60 percent of on-site parking and access to the market has been overtaken by festival personnel and barricades.
As guests on the market grounds, clear signage and adequate parking for patrons would be a minimum courtesy, the least the festival could offer for inconveniencing visitors and interfering in the livelihood of sellers. Frankly, residents such as myself don’t need help finding the overpriced Miller Lite tent — we need convenient access to Alice’s sweet potato pies. Many market regulars stay away for the festival’s duration, or worse yet, take their money to chain grocers.
Our diets and a healthy local food economy are the victims. Some reciprocity is due.

Really?
07/09/08 10:04pmYou knew the festival was going to happen. You couldn’t have bought a few more groceries at the market the days prior to the festival? The festival is only a week long and produce will last in the fridge that long. I have to imagine the festival may draw patrons to the market that may have not visited in the past and people who may not even know of its existence. Sorry you had to drive around the block once or twice to find a parking spot.

07/10/08 8:47amSeriously. Are you really complaining that your fragile schedule was disrupted for a week? More classic American thinking – me, me, me. Forget the economy, forget supporting businesses, forget everyone else – take care of me!!
BTW, new patrons to local markets and vendors = more business for said markets in the future. Keep that in mind before you complain about the impact to local businesses.

07/10/08 9:48amIs the extra exposure for the market not a good thing? This is a ridiculous letter. I’m very disappointed the State news chose to publish it.
You should also be happy for the “local” economy because the festival brings in tons of people that might shop at local businesses other than the City Market.
And why shouldn’t people shop at a chain such as Meijer. Its only located in the midwest and has half its stores in Michigan, not to mention was founded in Michigan. If Meijer does poorly then we will have a giant Walmart super center in every small town. Take your pick.

07/10/08 10:07amYou’re right, lets blow up the music festival that brings over $5,000,000 dollars into the community so you don’t have to walk an extra block to get your sweet potato pies… thank you for getting the priorities straight!

07/10/08 12:42pmIt’s not just the market that is disrupted. I like to fish the river in that area and the festival really puts a crank in my bait. Try casting a plug without catching some hippies hair with the dang thing. Last year I did catch a nice carp using the patch from some dudes hair that accidentally got caught in my back cast so there are some positives I suppose. None the less I feel this money making venture should be canceled so I’m left with the peace and quiet I expect while fishing. I can’t believe how selfish some people are that they have to impose all that noise on me, me, me, me…..!

07/10/08 1:58pmI agree with the Author. I like to run through that part of the city in the early mornings, typically ending my workout at the market to enjoy a warm sweet potato pie. Recently, copious amounts of beverage cups and garbage have spoiled my both my morning and my workout. I think we should either cancel the festival or move it underground somewhere. Me, my needs, and my organic addiction should come first.
try it
07/14/08 3:28pmNext year when you have the same problem check out the Allen Street Farmer’s Market. It’s every Wednesday from 2-7 PM at the corner of Kalamazoo & Allen Street on the Eastside of Lansing.
Alice and her sweet potato pies are there. :)

07/17/08 9:14amThe festival is ONE WEEK LONG. Get over it. I’m sure those of you who were inconvenienced could easily find alternatives to your regularly scheduled activities for a week. I was able to access the City Market while the festival was going on, I don’t see why it’s a huge issue.
