Indiana Athletic Director Rick Greenspan will resign at the end of the calendar year, the Big Ten University announced Thursday.
This has been a very difficult time and I am aware that I have become the focus of criticism which will continue to distract Indiana University from its core educational mission,” Greenspan said in a press release. “Consequently I believe a new person will be in a stronger position to lead IU athletics moving forward and it is in IU’s best interests for me to stand down”.
Greenspan’s resignation came on the same day Indiana learned the NCAA Committee on Infractions added a “failure to monitor” charge to the school’s other four infractions stemming from last season’s basketball season.
A letter from the committee released by Indiana charged the Hoosiers’ athletic department with not following through when it knew that members of the men’s basketball staff were not following NCAA restrictions.
Former basketball head coach Kelvin Sampson and the university were charged with conducting illegal phone calls and three-way phone calls.
Both Sampson and former assistant coach Rob Senderoff have maintained Indiana was not aware of their infractions.
