Former spiker to play pro in Korea

January 9, 2008

Former MSU volleyball standout Katie Johnson will be putting her last semester on hold to follow her dreams.

Johnson spent her Christmas flying to Korea in pursuit of a professional volleyball career for the Korean Expressway Women’s Volleyball team.

Promising to eventually finish her final semester, Johnson is now tackling the almost impossible language barrier present in Korea.

“No one here, except for my interpreter, speaks English, and even my interpreter isn’t very fluent in it,” said Johnson in an official statement. “I basically just nod my head. Luckily the coaches are patient with me, and use a lot of hand signals and physically show me where they want me to go.”

Also new for Johnson is her position. While she played on the left side of the court for MSU, she has now transitioned to a right-sided player.
