The announcement from the MSU athletics department Tuesday about a new athletic sponsorship of more than $5 million with Huntington Bank hasn’t ruffled any feathers at MSU Federal Credit Union.
“It’s not unexpected, so we understand that that’s something they have in place, so we enjoy our own partnership,” said April Clobes, MSUFCU executive vice president.
A significant portion of Huntington Bank’s sponsorship will be used to pay for the $10 million scoreboard upgrades at Spartan Stadium.
MSUFCU has its own multi-year sponsorship deal with MSU athletics, but Clobes couldn’t reveal the length or amount of the contract.
She did say that the credit union will continue to support the athletics department for the foreseeable future and when the contract is up “in a few years” the two sides will likely sit down to renegotiate a new deal.
The credit union has its own advertising rights in Spartan Stadium and Breslin Center, per the terms of their deal, Clobes said.
“If you look at the history of MSU athletics, Huntington is not the first bank they’ve had a relationship with,” she said. “They’ve had a relationship with, prior to Huntington, PNC and (another) bank.”
