Bill Beekman is to be named on Monday the permanent director of MSU Athletics, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press.

Beekman was initially appointed to interim athletic director on Feb. 5, 2018. His appointment by interim President John Engler came just days after Mark Hollis left the position on Jan. 26, 2018. Hollis's departure occurred as MSU Athletics faced scrutiny in the aftermath from ex-MSU and former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar's sexual abuse scandal.

Prior to his roles as both interim and permanent AD, Beekman had served as acting president of MSU for one week after former President Lou Anna K. Simon resigned on Jan. 24. He had also served as vice president and secretary to the MSU Board of Trustees since 2008.

The appointment of Beekman to the position contradicts the February 2018 press release in which Engler said that no internal candidates would be considered in the nationwide search process for permanent AD.
