MSU interim president John Engler named former acting president Bill Beekman as interim athletic director, according to a press release.
“Just as the Board of Trustees had confidence in Bill to keep things moving as acting president, I have confidence that he will provide very capable leadership of the athletic department during this time of transition,” Engler said in the press release.
Beekman has served as the vice president and secretary of the Board of Trustees since 2008. He will remain in that position while he acts as interim athletic director.
“I am honored to receive this appointment and look forward to this new challenge,” Beekman said in the press release. “This is obviously a new day at MSU and I am pleased to be part of the changes.”
Beekman becomes interim athletic director after ex-MSU athletic director Mark Hollis retired on Jan. 26, amid the scandal of ex-MSU and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.
Engler said in the press release the search for a permanent athletic director will be nationwide and no internal candidates will be considered.
