A Michigan legislator requested an amendment to the state budget requiring public universities and colleges to report their expenditures for legal fees to the Legislature, according to a press release Friday.

Rep. Jim Runestad, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, originally proposed the budget amendment last fall for the Legislature to get more information on lawsuits on campus free speech violations. The release states he is calling for the amendment again because of the Larry Nassar case.

According to the release, "Public funds may have been used for legal services to mitigate the universities’ liability."

Runestad said he is joining the bipartisan group calling for President Lou Anna K. Simon's resignation.

“New leadership alone will not end decades of corruption compounded by a resistance to adhere to the Open Meetings Act, the Freedom of Information Act and basic provisions of our Bill of Rights, federal and state constitutions," he said in the release.
