Cassius Winston, a 2016 commit in MSU basketball's recruiting class, was named the 2016 Hal Schram Mr. Basketball Award winner on Monday, an award given annually by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, in conjunction with the Detroit Free Press.

Winston is a point guard for University of Detroit Jesuit High School and has averaged 22.5 points, 6.8 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game during his senior year for the undefeated 25-0 Cubs.

Winston will be the 14th Hal Schram Mr. Basketball Award winner to play at MSU, joining other Spartans such as Deyonta Davis, Matt Costello, Keith Appling, Derrick Nix and more.

Winston and the rest of his U-D Jesuit teammates will continue their quest for a state championship Tuesday night in the MHSAA state quarterfinals at Calihan Hall against 22-1 Ypsilanti. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.

The winner of that game will be headed for the MHSAA state finals at Breslin Center March 25-26.
