The No. 1 MSU basketball team defeated the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks Wednesday night at Breslin Center, 78-35.

The Spartans are now 10-0 on the season.

Senior MSU guard Bryn Forbes finished with 14 points, five assists and three rebounds while senior guard Denzel Valentine chipped in with 11 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Junior guard Eron Harris came off the bench and scored 12 points for the Spartans.

UMES senior forward Dominique Elliott led the Hawks with 11 points and four rebounds.

The Spartans jumped out to a 9-2 lead within the first five minutes of the game.

When the Hawks managed to cut MSU's lead to 11-8, Forbes hit a pair of consecutive corner 3-pointers to put the Spartans back up by nine, 17-8. This prompted a UMES timeout with 12 minutes to go in the half.

From there, MSU opened the floodgates. After a quick UMES bucket out of the timeout, the Spartans went on an 11-0 run to bring the lead to 28-10 with 7:47 to play in the first half. This prompted another timeout.

But MSU continued to pour it in, using a 22-8 run to to close out the first half. The Spartans led, 33-16 at the break.

The second half was much of the same. The Spartans opened the next 20 minutes of action on a 26-7 run to build a 59-23 lead with a little less than 11 minutes remaining in the game.

MSU eventually went on to win the game, 78-35.

MSU finished the game with 25 assists on 27 made baskets while 11 different Spartans got into the scoring action Wednesday night.

The undefeated Spartans will take on Florida at 6 p.m. Saturday at Breslin Center.
