State-wide Proposal 1 rejected by voters

May 5, 2015

Votes for the state of Michigan's Proposal 15-1, which would raise taxes to fund road repairs and more, are coming in and it's headed toward a defeat.

The Lansing State Journal, the Detroit Free Press, MIRS and Gongwer all called the election less than an hour after the polls closed at 8 p.m.

Before all the votes were counted, Gov. Rick Snyder said in a statement Tuesday night the measure had been defeated.

Only three counties have complete actual results, but the rest are slowly coming in.

As of 9 p.m., 86 percent of votes counted voted no on Prop 1. Stay with statenews.com for further updates as complete totals roll in.

Speaker of the House Kevin Cotter, R-Mt. Pleasant, said in a press release that Michigan voters want a simple solution – low taxes and a focus on roads instead of other projects.

"We put this question to the people, and they answered decisively," Cotter said. "We will begin work immediately on addressing the road funding issue that still faces this state.”

As of 9 p.m., results for Ingham County are beginning to come in.
