Halftime: Women's basketball leads Illinois 42-30

February 25, 2015

Whenever sophomore guard Tori Jankoska finishes a contest as the team's leader in the points column this season, the Spartans have come away with a victory.

At halftime the Spartans appear to be on that path again. They lead Illinois 42-30.

That was evident when MSU nearly caused a court storming this past Sunday in East Lansing when they knocked off No. 20 ranked Rutgers, with Jankoska posting a game-high 21-points.

Three days later, with seeding in the upcoming Big Ten tournament on the line, Jankoska has put on a show at the State Farm Center, matching her season-average in points per game with 16.

The Spartans opened up the contest strong offensively, garnering a 15-7 lead advantage with less than four minutes into the contest.

They would later heighten their lead to 11 following Anna Morrissey's second three-pointer from beyond the arc three minutes later. She's tied for third on the team with Becca Mills with six-points.

The closest Illinois got to grabbing a lead change was when Jacqui Grant converted both sets of free throws to cut the deficit to six. However, MSU regained a double-digit lead a minute later when Jankoska hit an uncontested layup underneath the basket.

Britanny Carter leads the Illini with 10 points, shooting 80 percent from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Ivory Crawford isn't far behind with nine, followed by Chatrice White with five.

A win tonight would erase the tiebreaker in the conference standings at nine, causing Illinois to fall to No. 10. Finishing tenth or higher at the end of the season provides a program a day of rest and the opportunity in not having to play on opening night of the tournament.
