Sixth-ranked senior heavyweight Mike McClure qualified for the NCAA Championships this past weekend with a strong performance at the Big Ten Championships - however, it's not yet known what place McClure earned at the Big Ten meet as of press time.

This is his second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships.

McClure went 1-1 in session one of the Big Ten tournament, beating No. 11 Purdue  senior Alex White, then losing to No. 3 Northwestern junior Michael McMullan in a 5-1 decision.

The loss took him out of the first-place competition, but McClure came back in session two to win against No. 12 Illinois Chris Lopez and seventh-ranked Wisconsin sophomore Connor Medbery.

Both wins in session two guaranteed McClure the trip to nationals - nine heavyweight athletes go to the NCAA Championships because of the large load of wrestlers in the category.

Sessions one and two happened on Saturday and sessions three and four happened on Sunday, both in Madison, Wis.

In the third session, eighth-ranked Penn State junior Jon Gingrich fell to McClure, guaranteeing the MSU senior third or fourth place. He was set to wrestle fourth-ranked Iowa junior Bobby Telford on Sunday evening.

In the 184-pound category, seven wrestlers will make it to the national competition. Junior John Rizqallah qualified for the national competition for the second time as well.

He lost his first match against sixth-ranked Ohio State sophomore Kenny Courts in session one.

Coming back from the loss, he wrestled No. 4 Nebraska freshman TJ Dudley, winning in overtime by one point, but went on to lose against No. 8 Illinois freshman Nikko Reyes.

Winning the match to take seventh place, Rizqallah wrestled against Indiana sophomore Luke Sheridan.

Fifth-year senior Bobby Nash at 165 pounds and junior Nick McDiarmid at 197 pounds were competing as of press time for 9th place in their respective divisions, but do not have a chance to move on to the NCAA Tournament.

Only eight wrestlers for both weight categories can move on to nationals.
