Bill to loosen class retake policy

February 19, 2014

The stress and importance of getting good grades is something every college student across the country is forced to deal with.

ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government, is scheduled to vote on a bill that would recommend a change to university policy allowing students to retake any class regardless of their grade.

According to university policy, students only can retake a class if you get a grade below a 2.0.

“Obviously there is some interest for it to be brought to ASMSU in the first place,” said Mitchell Goheen, ASMSU vice president for academic affairs.

But as Goheen pointed out, one of the biggest arguments against the bill is that students with more money will be given an unfair advantage — the option to essentially pay for better grades.

The bill has to go through a long process before it would materialize into a new policy.

After being voted on by the ASMSU general assembly, it would have to make its way to the provost or the MSU president’s office.

Opinions on the matter were mixed throughout campus, but many students, including journalism sophomore Victoria Bowles, think the choice should be up to the students.

“Students are here to be educated,” Bowles said.

“If they feel like they didn’t understand the course when they took it the first time, it should be up to them to decide whether they retake it again,” she said.

But even though students are accepting to the idea, the contrasting view is that students might not approach classes the same way as they normally would.

Some people, including professors, expect performance to dip if students approach classes knowing that there are fewer consequences if they don’t perform well.

“I feel that unless there are some extenuating circumstances like heath issues or a death in the family, then I feel academic integrity means that you should try your hardest in the class,” said English professor Benjamin Phillips.

Phillips said only in such circumstances would it be acceptable for students to take a class over again.

The general assembly is scheduled to vote on the bill during its meeting on Thursday.
