Gymnastics falls to Illinois in road meet

The MSU gymnastics team suffered their third straight loss as they fell to Illinois 196.125-193.35 Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans had another strong performance on floor exercise as they scored 48.95 as team, led by freshmen Nicola Deans with a 9.875, a season high.

MSU did well on vault as well posting a team score of 48.875. Senior Taira Neal won the discipline with 9.85.

Even with the strong individual performances, the Spartans were unable to win a discipline.

Illinois took the top two spots in the all-around competition with scores of 39.375 and 39.25. Freshman Lisa Burt finished third with a 38.8.

“We improved our routines since last week,” head coach Kathie Klages said in a release. “We still have a lot of work to do though, in order to be competitive in the Big Ten.”

The next time the Spartans are in action is at 7 p.m. Friday at Jenison Field House when they take on Minnesota.
