Alleged I-96 shooter Raulie Casteel, an MSU alumnus, has been deemed competent to stand trial, said Joy Yearout, a spokeswoman for the attorney general’s office.

Casteel faces terrorism charges, as well as intent to murder and multiple felony weapons charges, from Michigan’s Attorney General Bill Schuette after reportedly going on a shooting spree involving 24 people between Oct. 16-27.

The shooting spree spanned multiple counties, including Ingham.

Only one person was injured.

Yearout said the next step is a preliminary examination, which does not yet have a set date, where evidence will be presented and the judge will determine if the case will go to trial.

If the judge does bound the case over for trial, a criminal responsibility test might then take place, Yearout said.

Casteel, who was in an Oakland County jail during Wednesday’s proceedings, faces another competency hearing Thursday in Novi, Mich., on similar charges.

He is being held on a $2 million bond by Livingston County and held without bond by Oakland County, Yearout said.
