As of 2:30 a.m., it remained undecided who would take two spots on the MSU Board of Trustees.

At this time, incumbent Joel Ferguson held a firm lead in seven of 10 largest counties in Michigan, but the incumbent Melanie Foster’s spot was more questionable.

According to various county reports, Ferguson led the race with 1,113,499 votes, followed by Brian Mosallam with 976,475 votes, Foster with 917,139 votes and Jeff Sakwa bringing up the rear with 827,382 votes.

As of 11:30 p.m., in two of Michigan’s largest counties, the race was a little closer. In Oakland County, Ferguson held a firm lead with 257,905 votes against Foster’s 227,511 votes, Mosallam’s 220,093 votes and Sakwa’s 212,147 votes.

Mosallam made up some ground in Wayne County. Wayne County’s latest report stated Ferguson continued to hold a solid lead with 49,905 votes. Mosallam continued to fight off Foster with 43,255 votes, compared to Foster’s 35,046 votes. Sakwa had 31,052 votes.

Ferguson and Foster currently serve as the chairman and vice chairwoman on the board, respectively, and the two winners of the election will serve an eight-year term on MSU’s governing board.

“I’m very excited if that holds,” Ferguson said. “And I think it should hold up across the state.”

Ferguson has been on the board since 1986 and has been the chairman since 1992. Foster was elected onto the board in 2004, but also had a brief stint on the board from 1991-92 when she was appointed to the board by then-Governor John Engler.

At MSU, Mosallam was a three-year letterman on the MSU football team, serving as a co-captain his senior year. Mosallam said in previous State News articles he has been very confident in his chances and remained “cautiously optimistic” after hearing early voting results.

“At the end of the day, when the final votes are tabulated, the bottom line is we’re all Spartans,” Mosallam said.
