Football player sentenced to jail

November 6, 2007

Carl Grimes, an MSU junior reserve wide receiver, was sentenced to three days in jail Monday after pleading guilty to violating the terms of his probation.

According to court records, Grimes was sentenced to one day in jail and six months probation and fined more than $900 in early August after pleading guilty to one count of operating a vehicle while impaired. He was charged in May with one count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, but he pleaded guilty to the lesser sentence of driving while impaired in June.

Grimes is scheduled to begin his three-day jail sentence on Nov. 23 — about one week after the Spartans football team finishes its season at home against Penn State.

In nearly three full seasons with the Spartans, Grimes has played in 18 games and totaled seven catches for 45 yards.

Sports Information did not return a phone call Tuesday regarding the sentencing. A message left with Carl Grimes was not returned Tuesday.
