Basketball teams to start practice at free event

Izzone members and basketball fans from all over won’t be the only people flocking to the Breslin Student Events Center on Friday. The men’s and women’s basketball teams and their coaches will be on hand for “The Main Event,” a midnight scrimmage that will kick off the 2000-2001 basketball seasons.

Monday was the first time new women’s head basketball coach Joanne McCallie felt the connection - the one that meant for the first time that she wasn’t a new coach teaching old players.They were a team.It happened after junior captain and forward Abby Salscheider bench pressed 150 pounds.

Mens tennis finish meet early due to cancellation

Because of dropping temperatures and the cold front that followed, the MSU men’s tennis team found itself unexpectedly returning to East Lansing from the Indiana State Invitational on Sunday - a day earlier than previously anticipated.The tournament, held at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind., was canceled on Sunday because of the lack of indoor tennis court and the unusually cold weather conditions, which were prevalent throughout the Midwest this weekend.

Injury sidelines spiker

An ankle sprain suffered in practice Thursday forced freshman outside hitter Amy Sibbernsen out of the starting lineup this weekend for the first time all season. Entering the weekend, Sibbernsen had started every match for the women’s volleyball team.

Kickers defeat Wolverines

While the fans huddled together at Old College Field in an attempt to shield the cold Sunday, the women’s soccer team braved the snow flakes while beating its in-state rival Michigan 1-0 to cap off a two-win weekend.Sophomore midfielder Heidi Lutz, who scored the game-winning goal, said the chilly weather conditions did not affect the team’s play.

Spikers split weekend home matches

After a weekend full of upsets, only Ohio State remains undefeated in Big Ten volleyball. MSU dropped to 4-2 in conference play after splitting its weekend matches, but is still in the hunt for the Big Ten Championship.Senior middle hitter Jessica Sanborn said the Big Ten conference is interesting this year.

Icers rebound to dominate Canadian team

The men’s ice hockey team had something to prove after being embarrassed in its first exhibition game, and Western Ontario was in the wrong place at the wrong time.Senior defenseman Jon Insana opened the scoring for MSU less than a minute into Friday’s contest and the Spartans never looked back, smoking the Mustangs 7-0 at Munn Ice Arena.In beating Western Ontario, the Spartans split their two exhibition games.

Muskegon gridder commits to U

Jason Randall, a 6-foot-6, 240-pound tight end from Muskegon, verbally committed to join the Spartan gridders next fall. Randall, who is best noted for his size and running speed, is a top 20 in-state recruit and should be a nice compliment to MSU’s team, said Bill Kurelic of the online recruiting service Rivals100.com.

Teams primed for weekend competition

The men’s ice hockey team will battle Western Ontario at 7:05 p.m. today at Munn Ice Arena. Coming off a 6-4 upset loss to the under-18 USA Development Team on Tuesday, head coach Ron Mason’s club looks to rebound against the Canadian university. “We wanted to skate against (the National Team),” Mason said, referring to playing a finesse-style game.

Mens soccer loses to Oakland 1-0

ROCHESTER - In a 1-0 loss to Oakland University Wednesday, the MSU men’s soccer team got a taste of international play without setting foot on Australian soil. Instead the Spartans (5-5) made their way across the state to Rochester to take on the Golden Grizzlies (6-3-1) - a team containing six European players.MSU head coach Joe Baum said Oakland recruits rather than settling for second rate in-state players.
