Spartans' men's soccer shut out Wisconsin, 1-0, Sunday in Madison, Wis. The game was scoreless for the first half and much of the second half before senior midfielder Jeff Krass made a goal off an assist from junior attacker John Minagawa-Webster.

Men's soccer player given offensive award

MSU men's soccer sophomore forward Ryan McMahen was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, netting one goal and three assists in MSU's win over Penn State on Sunday. McMahen, who did not play in 2002 because of an injury, brought his season totals to six goals and six assists.

Women's soccer star scores 3 goals, honored

Women's soccer senior midfielder Michelle Perun was named the Big Ten's Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after scoring three goals in the Spartans' current two-game winning streak. Perun scored her first goal of the season in MSU's 3-2 win over Bowling Green on Oct.

Men's soccer faces Penn State on Sunday

After last week's painful loss to Michigan, the men's soccer team is ready to bounce back. The Spartans (7-3-2 overall, 1-1-2 Big Ten) will have a chance to redeem their loss Sunday when they take on Penn State (6-5, 1-2) at 2:30 p.m., their last Big Ten conference home game. Overall, MSU has an average of 1.8 goals per game, while its opponents are averaging 1.2 goals.

'U' 2nd half not enough against U-M

By Bob Darrow Special for The State news The MSU men's soccer team has heard coach Joe Baum tell them that in order to win a game, they have to give 110-percent effort for the full 90 minutes. After Sunday's 4-2 loss to rival Michigan, the Spartans are likely wishing that half the amount of time would have been enough. The contest at Old College Field was a tale of two Spartan teams - one that was thoroughly dominated by Michigan in the first half, and the other that stormed out after halftime to score two quick goals and continue to threaten the Wolverines' lead for the duration of the game. For the first 46 minutes, the action belonged almost entirely to U-M.

"It was a huge, huge win for us," head coach Joe Baum said. The sunny afternoon game yielded no scoring in the first half, with both teams struggling to find an offensive rhythm.

The MSU men's soccer team increases its record to 4-2-2 with a win and a tie over the weekend. Junior forward John Minagawa-Webster scored two of his team-best five goals. MSU continued its tie streak in the Big Ten (0-0-2) by coming up even against Northwestern on Sunday, 1-1, in Evanston, Ill.

The No. 19 women's soccer team heads to Eastern Michigan for a 4 p.m. game in Ypsilanti. Both teams have a 1-1 record. MSU shut out Eastern last season, 3-0. "We want to build on the success (from last season) and get another bid in the NCAA and try to get further into it," head coach Tom Saxton said.

The MSU men's soccer team will be facing Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne at 4 p.m. this Sunday in Fort Wayne, Ind. "We're creating some quality chances and hopefully we can break out this weekend," MSU head coach Joe Baum said. The MSU team is made up of primarily veterans, while IPFW's team is fairly new to Division I.

Two wins and one loss made up a soccer weekend at Old College Field. On Monday afternoon, the men's soccer team (1-1) lost its second game of the MSU/Radisson Fall Classic to Loyola Marymount 3-1, while defeating Xavier 1-0 Sunday.

Women's soccer looks for win against Furman; men hoping for 3

Old College Field will be busy this weekend as both the men's and women's soccer teams host opponents on the banks of the Red Cedar for their first contests of the regular season. Last week, the teams played in exhibition games with the men's squad tying Rutgers 1-1 and defeating Kentucky 2-0 in the IPFW Soccer Showcase in Fort Wayne, Ind.
