Baseball tops Oakland 2-1 in home opener

Tony Wieber has been doing a little bit of everything for the MSU baseball for awhile now. In the Spartans’ home opener Friday at Kobs Field at McLane Baseball Stadium, the junior utility player put his versatility on display. With the game knotted at one in the bottom of the eighth, Wieber hit a triple to left center field to bring home junior left fielder Jordan Keur all the way from first.

Spartans to play Oakland in 3-game series home opener

Despite earning a program-building victory against then-No. 11 St. John’s in its first official game of the season on the road, there’s nothing like a little home cooking for Ryan Jones and the MSU baseball team. Following an opening stretch of 17 games on the road, the Spartans (10-7) return to McLane Baseball Stadium at Kobs Field for the first time in the young season this weekend for a three-game set with Oakland (3-12), starting at 3:05 p.m.

Baseball anticipates home opener this weekend

About a year ago at this time, the MSU baseball team returned home to a frozen baseball field and the bitter chill of March. This year has been a much different story. Having won six of their last seven games to cap a 17-game road trip, the Spartans (10-7) return home to host Oakland in the first series of the year at McLane Baseball Stadium at Kobs Field.

Baseball travels to Cincinnati for three-game series

As the MSU and Cincinnati men’s basketball teams prepare for the end of their season in the NCAA Tournament, the seasons of its respective baseball programs are just starting to come together. The Spartans (7-7) are looking for their bats to heat up and create a little March Madness this weekend in a three-game road series with the Bearcats (8-6) at Marge Schott Stadium in Cincinnati.

Baseball play with last year’s loss in mind

It might be early in the season, but Justin Scanlon still hasn’t forgotten the way the last one ended. The senior shortstop and captain of the MSU baseball team walked off the field at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio, at the end of May 2011 with his head down and his dreams dashed, as Illinois beat the Spartans in the Big Ten Tournament championship game by a final score of 9-1.

Morrall, Gibson to be honored

The Spartan baseball program will honor Earl Morrall as its Alumnus of the Year at the annual First Pitch Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Kellogg Center. In addition, former Spartan All-American and current Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson will be on hand for a jersey recognition.

Tigers need to stay consistent to make playoffs

With the additions of third baseman Wilson Betemit and pitcher Doug Fister, the Tigers have upgraded to make a serious run. Trade deadline deals Have gone poorly in the past, but Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski has an eye for talent and has added significant pieces at the deadline, such as Jhonny Peralta in 2010.
