Call for Spartan Virtual Choir celebrates 100th anniversary of Fight Song

MSU is celebrating its fight song's 100th anniversary in 2015 by inviting those in the MSU community to send videos of themselves singing the song to create the first-ever Spartan Virtual Choir. A video published on July 1 asked viewers to record a video of themselves singing along to the song and upload the recording to www.msu.edu/fightsong.  MSU's fight song was composed by cheerleader and civil engineering major Francis Irving Lankey at Michigan Agricultural College in 1915 and most of the words were written by Lankey's friend and fellow MAC student Arthur L.

Abrams Planetarium to host show with animals Saturday

The Abrams Planetarium is bringing the constellations to life this weekend. At 2:30 p.m. on Saturday the planetarium is offering a free, special show called 'Star Safari' that pairs learning about the constellations with meeting their small animal counterparts brought from the Potter Park Zoo.

MSU's gardens among best in the U.S.

MSU's W.J. Beal Botanical Garden and Hidden Lake Gardens have both been ranked by Best Colleges Online among the "50 Most Amazing University Botanical Gardens and Arboretums in the U.S." The rankings and ratings for each garden were assessed on a points system which awarded gardens for not only having a wide and manicured variety of plant species, but also for categories such as previous awards won, conservation and education, having a connected university degree program and 'Wow' factors. Tobacco-free policy more educational than punitive

With the Board of Trustees decision last week to institute a new tobacco-free policy at MSU, a few aspects of the policy have yet to be ironed out before it is eventually implemented August of 2016. However, MSU spokesperson Jason Cody said the policy will be geared toward education rather than be punitive in nature.

MSU Police warn community of phone scammers

MSU Police are alerting community members of East Lansing of a potential telephone scam. According to a press release from the MSU Police, several East Lansing community members have reported callers claiming to be police officers and telling people they have a warrant out for their arrest for tax evasion with the FBI and IRS.

MSU Grand Rapids Research Center begins construction

Ground was broken Wednesday on the construction of MSU's new Grand Rapids Research Center. The building is an $88.1 million, six-story, 162,800-square-foot facility that will include research program spaces and five core labs that will benefit the MSU College of Human medicine scientists and researchers. "We envision the MSU research building and Grand Rapids Innovation Park to be a gateway to the Medical Mile and a magnet attracting business in life sciences and growth in the biotechnology sectors," MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon told MSU Today. The new research facility will be located on the corner in Monroe Avenue in downtown Grand Rapids and is expected to be completed and opened late 2017.  When it opens, it is expected to support 260 members of the MSU College of Human Medicine's scientific research teams.

MSU Board of Trustees approve increased tuition and smoking ban

The Trustees raised tuition by 2.7 percent for in-state lower division students, or roughly $12 per credit hour, and 2.7 percent for upper division students. Though the Trustees lamented the tuition raise, with many blaming the declining state support for higher education. “These always difficult decisions, balancing acts," President Lou Anna K.

Students weigh benefits of online summer courses

Although MSU is more relaxed in the summer, there are still professors teaching on campus and students doing homework and going to class. “One of the biggest differences with the summer course is it’s only seven weeks, opposed to 15 weeks in the other semesters, so everything is rushed,” doctoral student Julie Bell said.
