Coalition to address primary voters

In response to a petition created by the anti-same-sex marriage organization, Citizens for the Protection of Marriage, the Coalition for a Fair Michigan plans to address voters today at primary polls all over the state. Coalition volunteers said they want to educate voters on the proposed Michigan Marriage Protection Amendment's wording, which will possibly be on the November ballot, and the effects of the amendment on residents if it were passed. "The amendment goes really far beyond marriage," said Wendy Howell, campaign manager for the Coalition for a Fair Michigan.

Man attempts to abduct woman

East Lansing police received a call at 12:45 a.m. Friday reporting an attempted abduction near Albert Avenue and Milford Street, according to a police report. Earlier in the night, a man described to be in his early twenties allegedly approached a female, grabbed her and placed a cloth soaked with some type of liquid over her mouth, according to the report. E.L. boy dead after vehicle, scooter crash

An 8-year-old East Lansing boy, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead late Friday night at Lansing's Sparrow Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in an accident, which had occurred earlier in the evening, East Lansing police Sgt.

Alumnus sets up charity bike race

All his life, George Siegle loved cycling. In high school, Siegle rode instead of taking the bus because he said it was faster. Taking this love of cycling, Siegle, an East Lansing resident and MSU alumnus, along with Chicago native Dave Racine, decided to fuse three of their interests - Champ Car racing, Lance Armstrong and cancer charities - into one event, the Tour de Road America. "I've been following Lance Armstrong's career for a long time - I read his book.

Nader sues Mich. to get spot on Nov. ballot

The Ralph Nader campaign filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the State of Michigan in a Detroit federal court. The suit claims the state violated Nader's First Amendment right to be placed on Michigan's ballot as the presidential candidate from the Reform Party, according to Nader spokesperson Kevin Zeese. Zeese said the decision by Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land to prevent Nader from being added to Michigan's ballot as a Reform candidate didn't make any sense. "(The Nader Campaign) was endorsed by the National Reform Party and the only recognized affiliate in the state," Zeese said.

The multi-purpose room of the Hope Borbas Okemos Library is home to a charitable cause during the summer Wednesday afternoons. Once a week, area preteens and teens come out to the library from 1-3 p.m.

An autopsy report released Monday revealed that the late Crunchy's owner David Milligan had a blood alcohol content level of .17, more than twice the legal limit, when he died in a traffic accident on June 10. Retired Mid-Michigan firefighter gets award

Retired Lansing firefighter Robert D. McAlvey received the Muscular Dystrophy Association's 2004 Personal Achievement Award for Michigan on July 16. McAlvey, who was once the captain of the Meridian Township Fire Department, had been a firefighter for 22 years before retiring in January 2004 after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. As the state finalist, McAlvey will be eligible to receive the MDA's 2005 National Personal Achievement Award.

ELPD riot lecture featured at speaker series

"It's something they can brag about to their friends and a story they will have to tell their kids," Wibert said. For 19 years, Wibert has watched the history of riots unfold in East Lansing.

Bills designate expansion of Mich. drug courts

Jennifer Granholm's decision to sign a package of bills to increase the number of Michigan drug courts represents a progressive approach to dealing with the state's nonviolent drug offenders. Drug courts oversee the treatment of people who abuse or are addicted to drugs or alcohol.

Application for new E.L. housing revoked

An application from Campus Village Properties to renovate part of the Ramada Inn property, 1100 Trowbridge Road, was revoked at an East Lansing City Council meeting on Tuesday, city officials said. "I believe the developer felt it was unlikely to be approved," planning and zoning administrator Bob Owen said. Community members were strongly opposed to the plans, which proposed a three-story building containing 65 student-rented apartments housing 204 students.

Annual race 'celebrates life,' raises money

Ellen's Race might have officially ended last summer, but the spirit and emotion behind the annual fund-raiser continues as Ele's Race debuts Sunday at Pinecrest Elementary in East Lansing. "We're hoping they will take this race and celebrate the life of a loved one who has died and use that for the inspiration for completing this race," co-director Lori Bosch said. As a nonprofit organization, Ele's Place helps more than 190 children each week.
