Ballroom dance organizations overlap while maintaining differences

There are nearly as many similarities as differences when it comes to comparing the two student ballroom dance organizations on campus — but the differences are important if you ask Nick Mizesko. Mizesko, a journalism junior and president of the newly established Spartan Ballroom Dance Team, said his organization reaches for different goals than the original ballroom dance organization on campus, the MSU Ballroom Dance Team.

Being part of ‘The Vagina Monologues’ provides outlet for senior

At two different points in her life, Chelsea Hill has been a victim of sexual violence. The psychology senior said it often is hard for women to find an outlet to talk about their experiences and the negative things that have happened to their bodies. For Hill, “The Vagina Monologues,” a series of stories that was performed this past Friday and Saturday at Wharton Center, has given her and many other women that outlet.

Series of monologues aim to empower women

Annie Rzepecki said she has two specific reasons to be part of “The Vagina Monologues” — two of the closest people in her life have been sexually assaulted. Rzepecki, a public relations graduate student, is one of the directors of “The Vagina Monologues,” which will debut at 8 p.m. Friday in Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre. The play is supported through VDAY, an organization globally working to end violence against women.

Paranormal society members bond by exploring unknown

Christopher Schuster has had a curiosity of the paranormal since he was in high school. Schuster, a criminal justice, microbiology and physiology senior, was a fan of the show “Ghost Hunters” on the Syfy network and wanted to branch out his interests with like-minded people at MSU. During his junior year, Schuster co-founded the MSU Paranormal Society

Theatre students to perform modern 'The Wizard of Oz'

Wes Haskell said the latest role he’ll be playing onstage is one he has idolized since he was a child. Haskell will portray the straw-stuffed character in the Department of Theatre’s “The Wizard of Oz,” which premieres Friday at 8 p.m. in the Auditorium’s Fairchild Theatre. The show will run through Feb. 27.

Reality show prompts student’s life change

Before she came to MSU, Kirsten Selley said she couldn’t remember a time in her life when she wasn’t overweight. At her heaviest, Selley, a medical technology freshman, reached 263 pounds and was ready for a change before she went off to college.When Selley was approached by a friend for an opportunity to appear on MTV’s “I Used To Be Fat,” she jumped at the chance and sent in an audition tape.

Nonprofit offers grief counseling, student volunteer experience

After experiencing the death of a close family friend because of suicide, Monique Dean made the decision to move forward by volunteering her time to a place that helps children and families who have gone through similar situations. The supply chain management senior watched as the younger siblings of her late friend went to Ele’s Place, 1145 W. Oakland Ave., in Lansing, and saw the positive changes and growth they experienced while in the bereavement program.

Spartan takes semester off to tour with Ozzy

After an evening of filming the Ozzy Osbourne concert at Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Wash., Colin Marshall was down among the pit of fans with his camera, wrapping up footage of the show. Marshall, who would have been a media arts and technology sophomore this year, took a semester off from MSU to tour with Osbourne when the opportunity arrived.

Alumni-founded symphony to perform winter concert

With a teacher for a mom and a coach for a dad, David Rosin said working with kids runs in his family. Rosin, an MSU alumnus, is one of the directors of the Mid-Michigan Youth Symphony, which will perform its Winter Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the East Lansing High School Center for the Performing Arts, 509 Burcham Drive.

Final call to put art in contest

The Lansing Art Gallery, 119 N. Washington Sq., Suite 101, in Lansing, is seeking 2-D and 3-D artists to exhibit work in the City Streets Outdoor Exhibition, which will run from May 19 through Sept. 15. Tuesday is the last day for the artist application deadline.
