COMMENTARY

Grand River Avenue upgrade necessary evil

Construction is very familiar to students and faculty at MSU. Recently, on almost every corner of campus, streets are being upgraded, residence halls are being renovated and new construction projects are being planned or executed for the benefit of those who utilize campus resources frequently.

COMMENTARY

Actions of few taint university name

Recently, violent acts have plagued the front page of The State News, gaining the attention of the East Lansing community, and, in some cases, international attention. There is no doubt that crime likely will happen on any college campus, but the severity of these crimes being committed by MSU students is tainting how the university is viewed across the world.

COMMENTARY

Mental health issues require sensitivity

On Monday, MSU professor John McCarthy suffered from what apparently was a nervous breakdown, stripping off his clothes and shouting at students until MSU police escorted him from the Engineering Building to hospital care.

COMMENTARY

Effort to curb lewd chants noble, futile

During the past few MSU home football games, there have been many vulgar chants that are taking away from the games and starting to gain attention around campus. And at last week’s ASMSU General Assembly meeting, the student section’s unsportsmanlike conduct was a topic discussed.

COMMENTARY

Concealed carry right, not requisite

In the aftermath of the Colorado movie theater shooting, the Colorado Supreme Court recently ruled that the University of Colorado Boulder, or CU-Boulder, could not ban firearms on campus. The right to bear arms is a constitutional principle, but a college campus is a place where students should feel safe, whether they choose to carry a weapon or not.

COMMENTARY

Communication vital for redevelopment

After the failed City Center II project and the controversial St. Anne Lofts project, the city of East Lansing might be approving another redevelopment undertaking near MSU’s campus. Although the project would provide students with convenient housing and entertainment, communications between the developer and the city must remain strong in order for this project to develop, free of architectural and monetary issues.

COMMENTARY

Universities not defined by rankings

When deciding which college to attend, a student usually looks at the strength of a school’s academic programs and what a school can offer as a college experience. Students utilize their experiences at universities as an opportunity to build their résumé while obtaining a degree, in the hopes of using it to land a well-paying career.

Lawmaker must accept consequences

More than eight months after he chose to get behind the wheel of a car intoxicated, State Rep. Bob Genetski, R-Saugatuck, was found guilty yesterday in East Lansing’s 54-B District Court of operating while intoxicated.

COMMENTARY

Unhealthy eating deserves closer look

Obesity is a health issue plaguing America, and the number of Americans who are considered obese continues to increase. In Michigan, obesity among adults is expected to reach 59.4 percent from the current 31.3 percent by 2030 if obesity rates stay on their current pace, according to a report released last Tuesday by Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

COMMENTARY

Fair to regulate hateful expression

Freedom of speech is an American principle granted by the Bill of Rights in the United States Constitution. It is a value this country is proud of, and is exercised daily through protest and expression.

COMMENTARY

Abrupt gym closings raise uncertainties

While living on campus, the added stress of classes, a convenient meal plan and a lack of exercise because of study habits and long work hours can cause students to gain unnecessary weight. Although many try to exercise at least occasionally, the travel time back and forth from intramural, or IM, facilities can be inconvenient. To combat this, many residence halls opened their own workout facilities.

COMMENTARY

MSU should consider smoke-free campus

As of May 1, 2010, Michigan citizens who went out to restaurants no longer were asked whether they preferred to sit in a smoking or nonsmoking section, after the passage of the Michigan Smoke-Free Air Law. Although indoor spaces, such as most workplaces and restaurants, now are smoke-free, in most areas of MSU’s campus, the fresh air still is open for smokers’ use.

COMMENTARY

Admission flaw overcrowds campus

There is no doubt MSU is crowded. Students who walk across campus every day know how busy the streets and sidewalks are. With an excess of students walking, biking and driving cars, there is barely any breathing room.

COMMENTARY

College education more than degree

Students come to MSU to earn a degree, make friends and create lifelong memories. But while doing so, many incur substantial amounts of debt that can take decades to pay off. Because of this, many students are re-evaluating whether or not college is a worthy investment.

COMMENTARY

Council plagued by St. Anne Lofts issues

A few months after the collapse of the City Center II planning and construction debacle, East Lansing City Council seems to be in over its head again in the managing of St. Anne Lofts, the construction of which has caused controversy, safety hazards and contention between the developers and city council.
