Stem cell research decision goes beyond religion

Wouldn’t it be great if some of the most debilitating diseases could be cured at the touch of a button? Unfortunately that’s not possible, so some special interest groups are pushing to lift Michigan’s ban on stem cell research so that dream can become somewhat attainable. Voters will have the opportunity to approve the proposal to allow stem cell research come November.

COMMENTARY

Politically correct ideas can stifle us

For all of its intentions to the contrary, the phrase “politically correct” has stirred quite a bit of ill feeling for itself. This is a complex matter with many strong emotions attached to it, and it is certainly too broad to discuss in 700 words, but I would like to set down some general thoughts on this postmodern phenomenon.

Common Ground interferes with Lansing City Market

The imposition of the Common Ground Music Festival on the Lansing City Market’s vendors and customers is uncompensated and barely acknowledged. More than 60 percent of on-site parking and access to the market has been overtaken by festival personnel and barricades.

COMMENTARY

Fines too extreme for passing trend

Our generation might have some of the most misunderstood fashions. From low-cut jeans to T-shirts displaying our most adored role models and idols, it’s no wonder older people sometimes question our choice of fashion.

Anonymity never guaranteed online

It’s ironic that one of the most famous agitator groups on the Web calls itself Anonymous, because a court ruling last week proved once again that there is no such thing as privacy on the Internet.

Extreme animal rights group not good fellowship sponsor

As a third-year veterinary student at MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, I consider myself an advocate for the health and welfare of animals. That being said, I find it alarming that MSU is hosting the Animals & Society Institute Fellowship Program (Human-animal program selects MSU as host, SN 6/5).

Obama should visit Iraq to fully understand war

It’s no secret we’re knee-deep in an unpopular war. Our next president had better have a good plan for dealing with our friends and enemies abroad and the experience to back it up. Some are convinced Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., just doesn’t have what it takes to represent America on the international stage.

COMMENTARY

Rice unconvincing in article on Iraq

Noam Chomsky and Condoleezza Rice don’t agree on much. I purchased Chomsky’s “Imperial Ambitions: Conversations on the Post-9/11 World” Monday, along with a copy of Foreign Affairs magazine, in which President Bush’s Secretary of State wrote an essay.

Sports kept honest by media scrutiny

Some of my fondest memories of summers past are the yearly vacations my family always took to Florida right around the end of June and beginning of July. They were great times swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, cooking out on the beach and eating lots of food.

COMMENTARY

Stem cell research goes beyond use of embryos

The State News carries a well-deserved reputation as one of, if not the best, university newspapers in the country. Based on columnist Ryan Dinkgrave’s piece (Stem cell research beneficial for Mich. SN 6/19), however, the paper should look elsewhere for a political columnist.
