Editorial board out of touch with average Michiganian
I cannot believe the State News editorial board took a stance saying that the elimination of the Michigan Promise Scholarship is “necessary” (SN 6/24).

You have one hour to decide between your life and your leg.” No, this is not the plot of the next inevitable “Saw” film. It is a very real situation my father faced almost a year ago.
Before the end of the year, almost 90,000 unemployed workers in Michigan will have dried out their unemployment benefits. The state, which boasts the nation’s highest unemployment rate at 14.1 percent, is struggling to find short-term answers to the state’s larger problems. There’s currently a bill sitting in the Michigan Senate that could do just that.
An ethical election process is vital to the sanctity and reputation of a governing body. With this in mind, I’m asking that the recent election held by the Council of Graduate Students, or COGS, be redone.
It’s far from breaking news to say the economy is drastically affecting the way everyone operates, and the government isn’t an exception. When economic conditions go south and taxes aren’t raised, the government has no choice but to cut back spending. That means no program or department is safe from having its budget reduced or eliminated all together.
When I got my first cell phone in the fall of my freshman year of high school, it didn’t have texting and it was for ‘emergency purposes’ only. My little sister’s first phone, which she got just four years later, played music and had an LED light-up screen. That’s not to mention it had unlimited text messaging, which is a good thing considering that in one month last year she sent and received more than 14,400 text messages.
A conflict between state law and public university power might lead to an increase in the presence of guns on MSU’s campus. The MSU Board of Trustees voted Friday to allow concealed weapons on campus, assuming the owner has the proper permits. Any person with a concealed weapons permit might bring a gun on campus, but not into any buildings, such as the dorms.
I know very little about the television industry. In fact, to say I know anything at all would be a lie. Give me a video camera and I’ll give you shots of people’s feet after I leave it recording. Tell me to build a stage and you might be lucky enough to get a birdhouse.
A wrongly convicted criminal serving time might not get access to all the evidence he or she needs thanks to a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision. The court decided Thursday that access to DNA testing for convicted prisoners isn’t a constitutional right, despite at least 232 cases having been overturned by DNA evidence in the U.S.
Have you ever wondered how many students at MSU choose not to have a Facebook.com page? Some of these students may be considered “outcasts” for not joining in on the frenzy, but they might be smarter than we think.
President Barack Obama will be presenting an hour-long special on health care reform with ABC News on Wednesday, but health care is not what’s being debated on this show. ABC has exclusive rights to broadcast the town-hall-style program, which will consist of the president answering questions from ABC’s prescreened audience.
During the weekend, state Rep. Pam Byrnes, D-Lyndon Township, made news by announcing at the Michigan Pride rally at the Capitol that she intends to lead an effort to reverse Michigan’s 2004 ban on same-sex marriage. The timing seems about right as support for same-sex marriage is on the rise nationwide and several states have legalized it in recent months. First, however, we must take a look at recent milestones in this civil rights battle.
The country that was built upon immigration might only need to use one language if a recent movement gathers enough support. Nashville, Tenn., has become the focal point of the debate to unify U.S. speakers and make English the official language of the country after a proposal appeared on the city’s ballot in January. If passed, the measure would require all city business to be conducted only in English, which would make Nashville the biggest city in the country to do so.
“I do not approve of it. I think there’s too much diversity in America to set an official language.” Dana Gustafson, human biology junior “I don’t think we should have an official language because it’s a melting pot, so I think any language should be welcomed.” Jeanne Underwood, marketing senior “We’ve got to standardize a language, especially since we’re such a mixing pot as we are.
I found out recently that a girl who is a junior in my high school had a baby about a month ago. I’m sad to say this wasn’t shocking news for me. I mentioned the baby to a friend who was surprised; he said he didn’t know anyone from his high school who had ever been pregnant. I realized I can’t even name them all off the top of my head, and that is somewhat disturbing.
In the wake of another Michigan Pride Festival, a chance to celebrate and educate people about Michigan’s gay population, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some have begun talking about overturning the ban on same-sex marriages voters passed in the state in 2004.
Coming off an election year where we had a fairly calm presidential campaign in terms of competition and a Congress that moved even further toward partisanship, we have seen a persistent trend that has plagued this country for decades.
When should economics influence the criminal justice system? It’s a question that Michigan finds itself tackling after the state House passed a bill to revise the state’s current policy regarding criminal eligibility for community corrections programs.
As a recent graduate of MSU, a current resident of East Lansing and a frequenter of many of East Lansing’s bars and restaurants, I support a comprehensive smoke-free law.
While I agree that the article Got protection? Study shows pulling out effective (SN 6/8) featured a topic that was both interesting and appropriate, its title was not.
