Michigan State wrapped its 2022-23 season with a gut-wrenching 98-93 Sweet 16 loss to No. 3 seed Kansas State, the team’s second time this season playing at Madison Square Garden. The Spartans missed a few free throws, gave up some turnovers and failed to make key stops down the stretch. Although they hung on to force overtime, the Wildcats ultimately outplayed them, moving onto the Elite Eight and knocking away the Spartan’s shot at advancing in the tournament.

Prior to the start of Michigan State Men’s Basketball’s 2022-23 season, skepticism arose on how the Spartans would fare with the obvious obstacles at hand — whether they had to do with the lack of depth, absence of an experienced center or the rigorous non-conference schedule ahead. This caused fans to question just how successful the Spartans would be by the time the final buzzer blared.

The Michigan State gymnastics team will be heading to Pittsburgh for the NCAA Regional competition. The Spartans finished the regular season as the No. 10 team in the country to punch their ticket to the regional round.The team, staff and supporters gathered in Jenison Field House on Monday afternoon for a selection show watch party that would decide their regionals fate. MSU will be joined in Pittsburgh by No. 2 Florida, No. 7 California, No. 15 Arizona State, No. 24 Maryland, No. 26 Western Michigan and No. 29 West Virginia. Those seven teams are automatically in the second round of the competition. No. 31 Towson and No. 32 Penn State will be the two teams competing in the first play-in round of the Pittsburgh Regionals for the eighth and final spot in round two. After the second round, the top four scoring teams will move onto the third and final round of regionals to battle it out for a ticket to nationals in Fort Worth, Texas. The top two teams from the final round of regionals will be advancing.“We appreciate all the support we’ve been getting. I’m really proud of this team we put together here,” head gymnastics coach Mike Rowe said Monday. “We set out from the beginning of the year this year as team 49 looking to create their own identity, and they’ve really been doing a great job at getting there and doing it.”Michigan State will first compete on Friday, March 31 in the second round, and if the Spartans advance, they will take to the floor for the regional finals on Sunday, April 2. The Pittsburgh regionals will be streamed on ESPN+.

The transfer portal opened up Monday and Michigan State wasted no time taking initial steps toward constructing its roster for next season. Four players have already entered the portal: sophomore forward Jesse Tucker, junior forwards Zach Dubinsky and Kyle Haskins and junior defenseman Powell Connor, a team spokesperson confirmed to The State News.

On Sunday, No. 7 Michigan State beat No. 2 Marquette 69-60 in the second round of the NCAA Men’s March Madness Tournament. The Spartans outscored the Golden Eagles 33-28 in the first half and 36-32 in the second half. Michigan State now advances to the Sweet Sixteen and will face No. 3 Kansas State on Thursday, March 23.

Michigan State gymnastics ended its Big Ten campaign in Iowa City where the Spartans claimed second place in the Big Ten Championship with a score of 197.550.From start to finish, the final session of the Big Ten Championship was a beautiful battle full of jaw-dropping performances from MSU, Michigan, Iowa and Ohio State. The all-around competition was a tight battle that ultimately saw fifth-year Michigan gymnast Abby Heiskell on top, but a show-stopping day from MSU sophomore Skyla Schulte landed her in second place with a high 39.625.
