Sometimes a semester can be rough, to put it lightly. During the fall, it’s often hard for students to get out of summer mode and into school mode, much to the dismay of our GPAs.
The first week of the semester conjures up a lot of thoughts, many of which are positive. However, nothing puts me off the semester quicker than seeing the price of my books and course packs.
East Lansing has finally received a much anticipated “real winter.” By “real winter,” I mean that the temperatures have at last dropped below freezing and a few inches of snow have successfully stuck to the ground for longer than a 24-hour period.
Happy first day back, Spartans.
It’s 2015, and the spring semester is officially here. I’m sure I’m not the only one disappointed that the holidays are over, but it is important to remember that the decisions we made while we were on break are sticking with us into the new year. For many individuals this new semester isn’t just another semester, it is the beginning of their year-long journey to better themselves.
I’m not someone who can be considered a role model for expressing oneself and owning your emotions. In fact, until recently my motto was to keep any hurt and pain bottled up inside myself and find a way to deal with all of it on my own.

I’m pleased that The State News and Anthony Herta are willing to have an open, honest dialogue about an issue that desperately needs to be talked about. The debate surrounding streaming music is an incredibly important one that we should be focusing on.
A little over a week ago, as I was walking through Brody Hall to get dinner, I was asked by a girl who was member of Spartans Fighting Cancer if I’d sign a petition to help make MSU smoke free, to which I gave a definitive “no.”
Black Friday — the day when shoppers lose all sanity to get the best bang for their buck.
We all want a healthy campus. I’ll just get that right out of the way. MSU has taken many steps to improve the quality of life on campus and they should be commended for such actions. However, we are not the healthiest campus in America. Recently, there have been pushes to turn the campus “smoke-free,” which would prohibit students and faculty from using all forms of tobacco (including smokeless) while on campus.
Taylor Swift is the queen of the music industry right now. Everywhere you look, Swift is creeping her way into your daily life promoting her new album. But one place you won’t see her bubbly personality is on the popular music streaming service, Spotify.
Michigan State is blessed with a beautiful campus – but not residence halls.
This is the 20th year that head basketball coach Tom Izzo has been at MSU, and through this time his impact on the team — and the university’s students — has only continued to grow in strength.
Since becoming head coach in 1995, Tom Izzo has recruited and coached 11 McDonald’s High School All-Americans. On Tuesday, the Spartans were beat by a Duke team that had nine McDonald’s All-Americans on their current roster. While Izzo undoubtedly has the ability to bring in the big-time recruits, it hails in comparison to what coaches like John Calipari, Mike Krzyzewski and Bill Self are doing these days.
