I worked hard to be a Resident Assistant.
When news broke that journalism professor and community activist Bonnie Bucqueroux passed away, students and colleagues were stunned. Although she hasn't been in school since early in the semester, I never realized how sick she was. Since she wasn't in class, her TA would Skype her in and she would teach the class from her home. After she discussed a few things with the class, professor Bucqueroux would wave goodbye and the TA would then play a prerecorded lecture from professor Bucqueroux's YouTube channel. With this series of events, I never realized professor Bucqueroux was so sick. She was always so overjoyed and full of life when she Skyped us that I never noticed.

Last Monday, Pope Francis set foot on American soil only to be greeted with the horror that is far-right conservative media. As the world economy continues its rapid globalization and expansion, it is more vital than ever that we maintain our higher education system’s integrity and intrinsic social value. While no one can deny the fact that the United States is home to a superior postsecondary education, there are serious flaws that plague each and every student attending our universities and colleges. Student loan debt, inflating tuition, and college accessibility are among the most prominent issues discussed in the halls of Congress and state legislatures, but a far more concerning problem needs urgent attention: sexual assault on college campuses.
You might have recently heard that MSU was ranked the most dangerous college campus in the country. You might have also heard MSU officials and spokespeople claiming that MSU was actually one of the safest college towns in the country. While statistics and arbitrary rankings might make for interesting reports, they do not get to the big issue — is MSU’s campus a safe place for its students?
In the wake of the release of the report finding Michigan State at fault for creating a “sexually hostile learning environment,” the rate of sexual assaults on campus and what can be done about them are being discussed now more than ever. President Lou Anna K. Simon emailed students and faculty regarding revisions to the university’s sexual harassment policy almost immediately, and other changes, such as the creation of the Office of Institutional Equity, are beginning to take effect.

On Tuesday, a federal investigation found MSU took too long to resolve complaints of sexual assault on campus.
This time last year, The State News was in the chrysalis of adapting to a new set of standards and reader expectations. Last year, by changing our medium and focusing our efforts online, we reinvented ourselves.
Modern slavery is oftentimes depicted as a phenomenon that occurs abroad, especially in third world or war-torn countries. Rarely do stories of human trafficking in our own backyards receive the same attention.
