Shots fired on Michigan State University's campus

Police surrounded Michigan State University after a mass shooting in North Neighborhood killed three individuals and left five in critical condition on Monday, Feb. 13, 2023. The gunman started in Berkey Hall where the first shots were fired before moving on to the MSU Union and leaving campus on foot.

MSU was in a shelter-in-place until the suspect was found dead by self-inflicted wounds. Those on campus during the lockdown were escorted home, many leaving the East Lansing area altogether. “We’re going back home,” said Lyman Briggs freshman Ananya Ramanan, “It’s hard to feel safe on campus at all once something like this happens.”

All university activities, including class and sporting events, have been canceled for the 48 hours following the shooting and crisis counselors will be provided at the Hannah Community Center. When asked what she hopes to see from the university, Ramanan asked for empathy. "In general, just be receptive to how people are feeling during these times," she said.
