The Spartans captured the Big Ten regular season championship in head coach Joe Baum’s final regular season game Sunday afternoon at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field, defeating Northwestern 1-0.
Senior forward Louis Stephens III scored the lone goal in the 54th minute to give the Spartans a lead they would not surrender, despite a desperate final flurry from the Wildcats.
The win ensured Baum would finish his 32nd regular season in charge of the MSU men’s soccer team with a championship.
Stephens said the Spartans would enjoy the victory before turning their attention to the Big Ten Tournament.
