After defeating Ohio State 4-3 in a double overtime showdown, the Michigan State University hockey team is headed to its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance as the No. 2 overall seed and No. 1 seed in its region.
Bowling Green State University will host the regional portion of the tournament as the Spartans head to Toledo, Ohio, to play at Huntington Center, home of the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye. MSU will face Cornell, which earned an automatic bid after winning the ECAC tournament title.
The tournament appearance marks the Spartans' 29th all-time, tied for seventh in Division I history. The team has now clinched No. 1 seeds in back-to-back seasons for just the third time in school history, the last coming in the 1989-1990 season.
Joining the Spartans and Big Red in the region are the Ohio State Buckeyes and Boston University Terriers.
MSU recently faced Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament championship and history has repeated itself. After last season’s win over in-state rival Michigan in the Big Ten championship, Michigan was placed in the same region, where it defeated the Spartans in the quarterfinals to advance to the Frozen Four semifinals, where they fell to national runners-up Boston College.
A rematch between the Spartans and Buckeyes could occur again, just two weeks after their previous meeting.
MSU is set for puck drop at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, at Huntington Center against the Big Red. The Spartans’ game will be the second of the day, following the 2 p.m. matchup between the Buckeyes and Terriers.
