The East Lansing Police Department is investigating the death of a 20-year-old man that occurred early Saturday morning.
At approximately 1:30 a.m., the police were dispatched to an assault that occurred in the 300 block of East Grand River Ave., according to an ELPD statement released Thursday afternoon. The victim was taken to Sparrow Hospital by the East Lansing Fire Department, where he later died.
He was identified as Caleb Alan Shermoe from Fowlerville. MSU spokesperson Mark Bullion said that Shermoe was not a Michigan State University student.
The department's statement said the police located the suspect and collected a statement.
"ELPD will be seeking charges on that suspect through the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office," the release said. "If and when charges are issued, the ELPD will release that suspect’s name."
In an email to The State News, Lt. Adrian Ojerio said there is "no danger to the public."
"The suspect has been identified and as indicated ELPD will be seeking charges through the Ingham County Prosecutor's office," Ojerio said. "No arrest has been made at this time."
The department also requests that anyone with information or video that could help in the case contact the East Lansing Police Department. Tips should be directed to Detective Austin Nelson or Detective Jason Cotton, the statement said.
