The Associated Students of MSU has increased the operating hours for Safe Ride, their late-night transportation service provided to students as a safe alternative to walking alone in the dark.
Last semester, the service operated nightly from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Although the app still lists those hours, the ASMSU Instagram page announced updated hours for the spring semester:
- Sunday from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.
- Monday through Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.
- Thursday through Saturday from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.
The new schedule is pinned on the ASMSU instagram page with a caption that says "Saferide is back and ready for you with new spring hours! Stay safe!"
The Safe Ride contact did not respond to requests for comment from The State News.
Safe Ride is not like typical ridesharing apps; its website outlines specific rules that limit the scope of its services. The service only does pick-ups and drop-offs at the following locations:
- Pick-up: on-campus buildings, dorms, off-campus apartments and off-campus work locations in the East Lansing area
- Drop-off: on-campus dorms and off-campus apartments
Safe Ride can deny service for different reasons, including if someone is requesting more than one ride per night. It is also a much smaller operation than Uber and Lyft. On the weekdays (Monday-Wednesday) only two vehicles are in operation, while three vehicles are operating on the weekends (Thursday-Sunday).
