Michigan State is regarded a premier sports destination throughout the country, but rarely is the Spartans' athletic success associated with a sport like golf.

In the last 20 years, however, MSU's women’s golf team has become a national powerhouse, in large part due to Head Coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll.

Slobodnik-Stoll is entering her 28th season on the job and her resumé speaks for itself.

In 27 years at MSU, she has led the program to 24 NCAA Regional appearances, 14 trips to the NCAA championships, 8 Big Ten titles and 44 tournament wins.

The program, although rich in success, is often overlooked and overshadowed by big-name sports like basketball, football and hockey. Slobodnik-Stoll wants students and fans alike to recognize the MSU women's golf team as the powerhouse it is.

"I know a large percentage of our population enjoys golf, and if they’re not paying attention to our women’s golf team, they should be," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "If they’re not, and they like golf, then they’re missing out because their own school is producing one of the best teams in the country."

As long as Slobodnik-Stoll has been at the helm, the team has has had sustained success.

"We’ve been one of the best teams in the country for over 25 years. We’ve won the Big Ten championship eight times," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "It’s been sustained success for over two decades."

The fact Michigan State has become synonymous with college basketball under Tom Izzo makes excellence in other sports harder to recognize, Slobodnik-Stoll said, but she knows the team has a tight-knit group of supporters.

"Obviously, everyone knows about basketball, not as many people know or pay attention to golf, but I can assure you that those donors, alumni and supporters who do care about our sport care about it very passionately," Slobodnik-Stoll said.

On top of athletic accolades, Slobodnik-Stoll has also made it her goal to create a winning atmosphere in the classroom.

"One of the most amazing things to me is that last year, we had the third-highest GPA of all 273 Division I golf teams. This past year, we had the sixth-highest GPA. We also finished 27th in the national championship," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "There’s no other school that was in that realm."

It’s easy to analyze and define success on paper, but for Slobodnik-Stoll, the team's success is measured off of the course and outside the classroom.

"We’re making a difference in young people’s lives," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "When I look back on my career and when I retire, the trophies that you see are obviously awesome and important, and when [former players] come back to me and say, 'thank you for teaching me this,' I didn’t realize how all these things are really what matter."

Slobodnik-Stoll herself is no stranger to MSU. Before her coaching career began, she spent two years leading the Spartan golf team as a captain under coaches Bruce and Mary Fossum.

"[The Fossums] treated us like we were their kids, and that’s all I ever knew, so that’s how we are still treating our student-athletes today," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "We treat them like they are our own children and we do everything to make sure they are successful and that they have everything to be successful."

Ranked No. 13 on the Golf Channel’s preseason rankings, Slobodnik-Stoll and MSU will look to continue on their paths of success. However, she knows what’s most important to keep in mind during such a long season.

"The season is all year, so it’s also important that we remember that we need to have fun, and then we definitely need to enjoy each other’s company," Slobodnik-Stoll said.
