Journalism sophomore and UAB member Meg Vandermark said their organization hasn’t put on an event like this before, but was happy with the large turn out. 

"It kind of has brought about a different audience that I feel like is quieter in a good way," Vandermark said. "It’s just a different demographic and more calm." 

English sophomore Esther Bienek, who attended the event, classifies herself as a "casual enjoyer" of crochet. Bienek said she finds the hobby "relaxing" and enjoys the ability to hand make her own clothes. 

Secondary education freshman Izzy Cyncewicz is new to crocheting, but wanted to attend the event to practice her skills and meet new people. She said it took her an hour to learn the basics, but doesn’t feel like the hobby is too difficult. 

"I'm a little bit of a perfectionist, so it's harder for me to pick up new stuff because I'm always worried I'm gonna screw it up," Cyncewicz said. "But I feel like crochet is fairly easy." 

Human biology senior Ariana Riegle has been knitting for 12 years and crocheting for six. Her advice for those just starting out is to pick a specific project to work on. 

"I think that’s the best way to do it because you can learn all the things you need to do for that project," Riegle said. "And if you’re interested in making a project, you’re more likely to stick with it."
