Two additional reports of aggravated assault that occurred on non-campus property in 2022 were added to MSU’s annual security and fire safety report, according to a campus-wide email on Nov. 13.
The number of off-campus aggravated assaults reported increased from 3 to 5 with the changes in the report.
The original annual report was sent to the MSU community on Sept. 29.
The email stated:
“In conducting a reassessment of a reported crime, a correction has been made to our crime statistics accordingly. This report is required by federal law and contains valuable information concerning safety and security at MSU. Anyone who becomes aware of a crime on property owned or controlled by MSU should report it to the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety.”
The university became aware of the additional two assault reports after a reassessing one reported crime concerning both assaults, MSU deputy spokesperson Dan Olsen said.
The university is required by the Clery Act to provide crime statistics to the public per an outlined geographic area.
According to Clery geography, the majority of non-campus property is MSU sorority and fraternity houses. Additionally, Clery geographic area includes properties owned or controlled by any registered student organization and areas used by students for MSU-sanctioned events.
In a recent risk assessment to ensure Clery compliance, the university determined that the two additional incidents were included in Clery Act-mandated areas, Olsen said.
“Anytime we become aware of additional information, we take a reassessment and make sure that we’re staying in compliance with Clery requirements,” Olsen said.
