Candidate for president of ASMSU Michigan State senior Peter (PJ) Sarotte answers five questions from ASMSU members during Q&A after his final speech before private discussion and voting begins. The ASMSU Elections were held in the Student Services Building Conference Room, on April 20, 2022, with Michigan State junior Jordan Kovach becoming the next ASMSU President.

Last night, the Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, wrapped up its final elections for the 59th session.

The Student Services Building had power issues on the first scheduled election day, so this year’s election was split over only two days as a result of the campus-wide power issues.

As a result, the first day of elections was held until nearly 3 a.m., starting with the election of the 59th session president.

Here are your members for the 59th General Assembly session.

President

Social relations and policy junior Jordan Kovach was elected as the president for 2022-2023. Kovach won with a total of 32 votes.

Vice President for Finance and Operations

Accounting senior Vipul Adusumilli was elected Vice President for Finance and Operations. He has been a part of ASMSU since freshman year and said it has helped them navigate campus as a first-generation college student.

Vice President for Academic Affairs

Social relations and policy senior Aaron Iturralde was re-elected as Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Vice President for Governmental Affairs

Social relations and policy senior Ishaan Modi was re-elected as Vice President for Governmental Affairs for a second year. During his speech, he says that he wants to work more on individual projects with CORES and COPS.

“There’s a lot that was riding on my reelection,” Modi said. “Continuity and sustainability of the department and so I feel really good.”

Modi plans to start ramping up for the 2022 election, getting at least 500 students registered to vote.

He mentions that he was interested in running for the 57th session Lyman Briggs seat because of the pandemic and how it was impacting students' mental health during the pandemic.

Modi ran against James Madison sophomore Kayla Catalano-Ott.

He strongly encourages anyone to contact him with any questions by emailing vpga@asmsu.msu.edu.

Vice President for Internal Administration

Social relations and policy junior Carl Austin Miller Grondin was elected as Vice President for Internal Administration against comparative cultures and politics senior Noihrita Masud.

History freshman Kathleen Tepe and social relations and policy junior Shaurya Pandya dropped out of the running for this position.

“I’m very happy,” Grondin said. “Prior to winning Vice President for Internal Administration, I was the at-large representative for the College of Arts and Letters for two sessions.”

Grondin says that he dropped out of the presidential race to signify unity within the student government. He didn’t want it to become a situation where people had to choose between him and a very good friend of his.

His plans for VPIA is to initiate a sense of community within his office.

Vice President for Student Allocations

Human biology junior Hady Omar was elected as Vice President for Student Allocations. He has been heavily involved in registered student organizations. He aims to be as transparent as possible, working with CORES and COPS staff and ensuring that everyone is working together.

Omar ran against history, philosophy and social science junior Simone Cleaves, who is involved with On The Rise. Masud dropped out of the running for this position.

At the end of elections, the 59th session was officially sworn into office.
