Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum reported today that the unofficial results from Ingham County for the 2020 general election are completely tallied.
“Local Clerks worked tirelessly to ensure that every ballot was tabulated and reported to me in a timely and efficient manner,” Byrum said in a release. “While overall the unofficial results in Michigan are still pending, I am very pleased with the hard work that our elections administrators and the poll workers did in service of the voters of the State of Michigan.”
Multiple Democratic candidates won Ingham County, with a high number of absentee votes across the board.
Former Vice President Joe Biden and his running-mate Kamala Harris won Ingham County with 94,221 votes, compared to President Donald Trump's 47,640. Of Biden's votes, 69,754 were cast absentee and 24,754 were cast on Election Day.
Incumbent U.S. Senator Gary Peters won 92,384 votes in the county, while U.S. House District 8 candidate Elissa Slotkin gained 96,400 votes. Both Slotkin and Peters had high rates of absentee votes, totalling 70,512 and 68,053, respectively.
The Associated Place called Michigan's U.S. House District 8 seat for Slotkin Wednesday. Michigan's U.S. Senate seat has not been called yet.
For MSU Board of Trustees, Incumbent Brian Mosallam and Democratic candidate Rema Vassar, won the county with 79,612 and 81,704 total votes. Currently, Republican BOT candidates Pat O'Keefe and Tonya Schuitmaker are leading statewide.
Mosallam and Vassar racked up 59,521 and 61,052 absentee votes, respectively.
Finally, Julie Brixie took the county's vote for the State House District 69 seat with 30,079 total votes in her favor. Of that, 24,023 were absentee and 6,056 were Election Day-cast.
Throughout Ingham County, of the 214,400 registered voters, 145,586 took part in casting a ballot yesterday. Voter turnout reached 67.9%, which is an increase of 2.61 percentage points from 2016.
Byrum said in the release that voters in the area took advantage of the mail-in and drop-box COVID-safe options, choosing to vote absentee in record numbers. Overall, 101,264 absentee ballots were cast, which is more than three times the number cast in 2016.
Additionally, Ingham County operated its first-ever Consolidated Absent Voter Counting Board, which counted Meridian Township's absentee ballots for the Nov. election.
“Through the hard work and dedication of our well-trained (staff) we were able to get Meridian Township’s results in about 10 hours faster than they came in this August," Byrum said in the release. "The economies of scale of this operation allowed us to work effectively and carefully, and get all of the ballots counted in a timely manner.”
The Ingham County Board of Canvassers began meeting this afternoon to finalize the results.
At the conclusion of the canvass, the election will be certified and the official results will be accepted.
Byrum was not available for comment at the time of publication.
